A Post-Script for Winter Break

It's closing time here in the residence halls, and as the rooms empty one by one, each student completing their respective finals to depart for winter break, I'm left with a sort of bittersweet sentimentality:

Happy to be going home for the first time in several months for a hard-earned and well-deserved vacation, but also surprisingly mildly reluctant because I have grown to love it here so much on campus.

It's hard to imagine that as a freshman, I now have one semester of college under my belt. It seems small but at the same time, so much has been packed into these turbulent first few months--including how I have grown because of it.

Winter Break Closing

Residence Halls close Thursday, December 19th at Noon.

Once you finish up your finals its time to finally TAKE A BREAK!  But Before you head home to wrap yourself into a blanket burrito and attempt to control Netflix with your mind so you can binge watch all 8 season of How I Met Your Mother, make sure your on campus room is ready for the winter season!

Before leaving for the winter break:

Please complete the following closing checklist, by checking each item off on the paper your RA will place on your door. The last roommate to leave should verify that these tasks have been completed, sign and date the checklist form, and tape it to your door.
  • Close and lock windows/leave shades up (removing all valuables from window area)
  • Defrost and clean refrigerators/leave doors open
  • Turn off lights/unplug appliances
  • Secure your valuables/take home fish and live plants
  • Remove all trash and perishable food
  • Remove all personal belongings from the communal bathrooms & kitchens
  • Lock your door

Residence Life staff will be inspecting student rooms and the common areas to assure compliance with safety and security measures.Refrigerators and other electronic items will be unplugged that are left plugged in. When you sign the closing checklist, it means that your room is ready to be inspected by the ResStaff member.

Dance, Dance

Finals week is upon us here at Simmons, and no place sounds cozier (or more terrifying) than your favorite study room in the library. In a break from the monotony of Spanish homework, last Saturday fellow blogger Mary Ying and I spent the day dancing with over 150 other Colleges of the Fenway Dance Project participants at our end-of-the-semester recital. Throughout the semester, students take free (save for a small costume fee) performance classes with COF instructors or enlist fellow dancers to perform their own choreography.

Some of my lovely new friends and general backstage silliness.

Real Talk: Applying to Simmons

Ah, winter. A time for cable knit sweaters, falling snow, pumpkin flavored whatever, and for some... the beginning of the anxiety that is college applications. We here at Simmons know the quest for higher education isn't always a walk in the figurative park, or whatever figurative location you prefer to cut through.

As a current student, it's almost nostalgic to see prospective students touring the campus with wide and wandering eyes, considering I was one of them two years ago. So when I find myself talking to prospective students I like to think I'm talking to my former self, settling all her worries and fears about the college process. Therefore I'm always prepared to answer the elephant in the room when it comes to discussing Simmons; What's it like going an all women's college?
