Start Your Semester in the Right Direction

Contributed by: Megan Swedeen

A new year means a new semester and a chance to start fresh. Need some ideas on how to get off on the right foot? Look no further.

  • Evaluate Last Semester: be honest with what study methods worked and didn't work

  • Make Changes: get rid of activities and distractions that caused you too much stress last semester

  • Make Study Guides Day 1: make your study guides as you learn new material so they are more manageable to create

  • Talk With Professors: don't wait until a week before finals to talk with your professors; ask for help early

  • Limit Caffeine in the Afternoon: it can keep you up at night

  • Set a firm bedtime: a consistent bedtime will make it easier to get up in the morning

  • Stretch Before Bed: it helps you slow down before bed and helps you sleep

  • Focus on Relaxation: tell yourself you will just lay in bed and rest instead of stressing about not being asleep; then sleep will find you

  • Write a To-Do List: to keep track of what you need to remember, so you can have a clear head before bed

  • Take a Step Back: ask yourself if what you are stressing about will matter in ten years

  • Take a Deep Breath: stress can prevent you from recalling things you already know

  • Now Breathe Out: stress can prevent your brain from remembering new things

  • Be Positive & Understanding: your troubles and frustrations may be resolved by a change in your own attitude

Be Good To Your Body

  • Schedule Time To Exercise: it is easy to neglect but makes a major impact on your health

  • Drink More Water: it helps make your skin look good

  • Schedule Time to Exercise: it helps reduce stress

  • Drink More Water: it helps energize your muscles

  • Schedule Time to Exercise: research shows your physical activity pattern in college indicates how it will be throughout your life

  • Drink More Water: it keeps your body functioning properly

  • Schedule Time to Exercise: it will actually boost your energy

  • Get To Know Boston: you may find a new study spot or make a new friend

  • Spend Time With Friends: remember your social life is important too

  • Explore This City: because you don't just learn in the classroom

  • Spend Quality You Time: time alone with no distractions can increase concentration and productivity
