Apple is starting to ship Leopard only computers

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

Apple has started to ship "Leopard Only" hardware.

This was expected behavior for Apple. The Generic OS installation DVD media that Simmons receives as part of its Maintenance Agreement with Apple *should* be installable on this new hardware. This has been noted for future testing.

MacBook (Late 2007): About the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation disk
The Mac OS X 10.5 installation disk that shipped with your MacBook (13-inch Late 2007) is designed for use on this computer only and not intended for any other computer.

The installer prevents this software from being installed on other Macintosh computers and other Mac OS X 10.5 installation disks will not work on the MacBook (13-inch Late 2007).

There is a lot of posting on the various System Administrator lists regarding Apple's penchant for immediately releasing new computers that are not backwards compatible with earlier Operating System's.

There are pro's and con's for each:

Pro: By not releasing new computers that will run older operating systems Apple can take full advantage of the enhancements in Leopard and not worry about having to be compatible even minimally with older operating systems. Apple can then spend their time and resources developing for the new hardware, software and operating systems/

Con:
Most succinctly put in a www.macenterprise.org post:

"It's not that I'm against the march of time. I just wish they
wouldn't release machines that are the staple of schools (MacBooks)
in the middle of a school year, after IT departments have settled on
an OS deployment, but not necessarily before they're done buying
machines. April/May would've been a much better time to release a
non-Tiger MacBook."
