MS Word, Leopard, and printing: crashes
Word crashed 4 times today. Each time I was trying to print to the networked Canon printer in our area. It feels as though this is somehow related to Spaces, even though I can't be sure.
I was primarily using Space 1, where my Mail, calendar, and browser are. I switched to Word, and a file on the file server, which took me to Space 2. I had been printing earlier in Space 1. I tried to print the Word document, and the document printed, but Word quit.
Then I tired to print again, same thing.
Later, with a longer document, the document didn't print and Word crashed. Finally the 3rd time I opened the document, I was able to print that file, and another, successfully. It was as though I needed to open the file in a specific manner: move to Space 2, navigate to the file using Space 2, double click on the file. Or something.
Very odd.

I've had some Word crashes to when trying to print a document. I can't connect it to my use of Space, but that is a possibility. I wonder about Microsoft's priority on getting out new Office apps. I've seen some colleges adopting OpenOffice, would that be something to investigate?

I continue to have Word crash when I try to print. I have noticed that Leopard sometimes makes a feint at switching back to Space 1 the first time Word crashes while printing, which is what's making me guess it's Spaces.
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is in beta. I tried OpenOffice at some point last year and found it slow and cumbersome, which is saying something when comparing it to MS Office! I think it's too early to ditch MS Office, but always worth keeping as an idea on the back burner.

I tried to recreate Kim's error:
With a word document local (on the computer's hard drive) I was able to consistently print to the Canon printer without any errors or unexpected quits.
I opened a word document from the DEPT network share and printed one short document without problems. After switching spaces and printing a web page from Safari, I tried to go back to the word app's "space". Sometimes I can see the contents of the space but it is locked up tight. Most of the time the space doesn't come up visible. I had to "force quit" Word to regain control ofthe space.

Jann just pointed me to this MacWorld article with a MS Office update that may fix the crash after printing problem. I've just applied it, so we'll see!
