Stolen Thunder
Posted by Amanda Collins
For some people, weekends are for doing housework, running errands, or catching up on school work. For me, weekends are reserved for one thing--sleeping in. I close the curtains tight on Friday night, and don't open them again until Sunday afternoon, so nothing can wake me up.
Nothing, except a phone call at 7 o'clock in the morning. Last Saturday, that's what happened.
It was my sister, Kristin. Not only was she wide awake, but she was fired up...and chose me to unload on.
"She's stealing my thunder," she said, as I rubbed my eyes and looked over at the clock. I had no idea what she was talking about.
"Danielle picked the same colors as me, black and white, and her wedding is first," she whined. "She knew I always wanted black and white! Can you believe it?" I could believe it, and I didn't understand why it was such an issue...especially in the wee hours of a Saturday morning.
Really, I don't understand what all the hoopla revolving weddings is about. Why do designate colors for certain people to wear, stress about what song we're going to dance to, and worry about what meaningless trinkets we'll give our guests? Why do we care who gets married first or last, as long as we know we're happy? And what I don't get most of all is, when it comes to your wedding day, can someone really "steal your thunder?"
I will be no less excited for Kristin on her wedding day then I will be for Danielle on her's...no matter when they happen or if the color schemes end up matching. These are days that should be celebrated, not stressed over, and I know that no matter who gets married first, who chooses what color for their invitation, our family will be happy for each of us as we enter new phases in our lives. There's no need for animosity, and there's certainly no need to worry about stolen thunder.
Going the non-traditional route for my and Travis' wedding, I wasn't planning on choosing a specific color theme. But now I'm thinking...black and white? Hehe.

I love the tone! Your dialogue in the blog really makes it unique from a lot of the other blogs in our class.

Your lead in, about longing to sleep in on Saturday, really set the scene, and your ending was perfect. You are right to say your sister "whined" on the phone call.
I am starting to wonder what your sisters's blog would sound like, though :)

Haha it's funny that you have such a different viewpoint than your sister. It is funny how things become so important-sometimes I wonder if brides get so scared about getting married that they focus on things like colors to freak out about because that's something I would do. Do you have any anxiety about the wedding so far?

This is really funny. It reminds me of some books I've read. You should turn it into a book! It's very funny material, and I'm sure it will only get funnier!
I feel the same way you do about weddings. I don't get why people make such a big deal about them. My friend makes me watch wedding shows on the weekends in the morning on TLC with her like "Platinum Weddings" and "Rich Bride, Poor Bride." To my amazement, shows like these actually exist! The amount of money people spend/how crazy they are about weddings is so funny to me!
My friend has pretty much planned out her entire wedding... I think she's nuts.
