To wear or not to wear

Posted by Amanda Collins

This morning my sister sent me the most vile, tasteless email. I immediately closed the window when I saw the vulgar image it contained, but all day, that picture keeps popping into my mind.

My bridesmaid dress.

Somehow, my stylish sister managed to pick one the ugliest garments I have ever seen for me to wear to her wedding. And not just wear- buy! Why do I have to spend money on something so dreadful?

So this leaves me in a rut. The mess—I mean dress—costs more than $300! That is money that I could use for my wedding, or even more importantly, my bills.

Even though it’s not something I want at my wedding, I understand the tradition of having bridesmaids and I’m excited my sister wants me to be such a big part of special day. I also understand that traditionally the girls who are lucky enough to wear a dress picked by someone else have to pay for it. But shouldn’t there be some discretion here?

So what do you think? Should I tell my sister I hate the dress? Should I tell her it’s too expensive? Or, in my role as a bridesmaid, should I buy the monstrosity and just make sure my hair looks really good that day so I’m not completely hideous?

Ooooh, could you post a link to the hideous dress, please??

I have been a bridesmaid in two weddings so my 'professional' opinion is that $300 is a lot to expect someone to pay, especially if they have no say on the specific item purchased. Basically, she is saying that there isn't another dress on the planet for less money that would be suitable for the women in her wedding party, which is just absurd.

Don't wear it! I would love to see a picture of the dress. What color is it?

Is there a way you can suggest a more flattering one? Perhaps collaborate with a fellow bridesmaid to approach the subject.

I think if you tell her you hate it she is going to take it personally and say something similar about your bridesmaid dresses. good luck!
