Adventures in Veganism: Dining out
Posted by Whitney Stanley
I was trying really hard to think of topics for this week's blog, and suddenly it dawned on me...I've grown so accustomed to veganism, it had become almost second nature! It's definitely a nice feeling.
Over the past couple of weeks, I have been exploring vegan dining options within walking distance with my friends (I'm so lucky to have the wonderful Emily Fleischman as a vegan support system...she is majoring in nutrition). Here is a list of some of our favorite places (these are NOT vegan restaurants):
1) Fagakyu - This Japanese/sushi restaurant is in Coolidge Corner. They have the most amazing miso soup I have ever tasted, and very fresh vegan sushi rolls (my favorite is avocado). But be forewarned, this place can get kind of pricey.
2) Rami's - This Israeli diner is also in Coolidge Corner. The falafel with hummus in pita is incredible! I'm salivating just thinking about it. The service is great too. The guy who served us was so friendly and animated.
3) Boloco - Yes, this is a chain. There is one on Longwood Ave. - just a few minutes away from the library. It's so easy to veganize your food here! I usually get a burrito with beans, brown rice, fajita veggies, regular and corn salsa, lettuce, and guacamole.
4) Bertucci's - Yep, another chain. There sauce does not contain any cheese, so I usually get a cheese less pizza. Last time, it had tomato sauce, spinach, roasted garlic, mushrooms, and sun dried tomatoes.
We are going to My Thai Vegan Cafe in Chinatown on Friday, so I'll let you all know how that is!
As for a recipe, I just made banana bread for my friend's birthday, and it was fabulous. Just combine all of the ingredients and bake for an hour and 15 minutes!
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 vegan margarine or butter (my favorite is Earth Balance)
3 ripe bananas (mashed well)
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 chopped walnuts
1/4 cup soymilk, mixed with 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (it needs to curdle)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 3/4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
