Portfolios

Posted by Jensen Pulling

The awesome thing about the internet is the ability to get your work out there. If you are an artist, there is now the option of having a digital portfolio! It's a great way, (and cheap, too!), to mass market yourself. You can even go global! It's a great way to put you ahead of the group in the job markets too. It shows you have a lot of digital experience, (even if you don't...).

Here's how:

Step 1:
Start a blog! Put yourself out there. Throw ideas around, shout out what you feel! You'd be surprised how many people are interested in what you have to say.

Step 2:
Get a Flickr account. I know there are many other programs, but Flickr is the best, (trust me).

Step 3:
Take HIGH-QUALITY digital pictures of all your work, (it's pretty easy if you work with digital pictures in the first place!) and set yourself up! Upload them everywhere you can think of. It's pretty cheap now-a-days to get your own website for a year, if you're tech-savvy enough to make it look professional.

Step 4:
Get a YouTube account. Seems silly, but people do use YouTube for portfolios. It's pretty cool to see how many hits you get, either way. It makes you feel like all this "art" you do is making some sort of difference. :)

Step 5:
Send your portfolio out in e-mails with your applications! There's a link on Flickr to a very legit-looking slide-show version of the folder of your choice.

I'll show you how easy it is.
Here's mine!

It's not totally finished yet, and it hasn't been updated in a while, but at least I'm out there!

I even got a Twitter recently, and I put up random links to cool artwork that I find. Be careful putting your masterpieces on Facebook though, because apparently if you're not careful they can get rights to your work! Flickr copyrights your photos for you, and makes it very difficult for them to be copied/pasted and printed. It's great.

Look at websites like these too! These are great tools to market your digital work:
