Gossip Girl 3:10 "The Last Days of Disco Stick"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

On this weeks episode of Gossip Girl, we were graced with the presence of musical royalty, Miss Lady Gaga. As a huge Lady Gaga fan I was personally ecstatic when I heard that she would be making a guest appearance on the show. Although she did not make her acting debut, her private performance at NYU which was arranged by the character Blair in an attempt to gain acceptance was amazing. She performed her newly released song called “Bad Romance.” Her performance flowed very well with the show and was not just randomly inserted into the plot. In an interview with MTV, Gaga explained that she did not want the performance to be out-of-tune with the storyline of the show, so she sat down with the script-writers and proposed her idea. Ultimately the song “Bad Romance” was made a part of the storyline and easily assimilated into the pre-existing drama of the show. "Bad Romance" debuted at number nine on the November 14, 2009 chart of the Billboard Hot 100, making it the highest- ... more »

Trip #7 Japan

Posted by Noor Hakeem

tokyo city One country that I always wish to visit is Japan. This season in my country, a very popular show was documented in Tokyo, the capital for 31 days in August. After seeing the 31 episodes, my wish of visiting Japan became even more and more wanted. For this week I will list some facts about the country. Short, easy, and interesting just as we all would want it to be. • Japan's national flag is called the Hinomaru. • Mount Fuji is Japan’s tallest mountain. • Japan is the 60th largest country in the world. • Japanese people have rice for their breakfast, lunch, and dinner. • Japan experiences an average of 1500 volcanoes every year. • Sushi (that most of us eat) is a Japanese originated recipe. • It is usually not a choice to give a landlord who sold the house a gift of $1,000-$2000 when a person moves into a new house. • Japanese toilets in all different places have a heating system and a sound system so that the person beside you wouldn’t be annoyed by what you are d ... more »

The Customer is WRONG!

Posted by Maureen Azor

Soooo I'm sick and tired of customers telling me that I'm wrong about the menu. Listen up people... I work here 20-30 hours a week. This restaurant is my home away from home. If I say we don't serve coleslaw, we don't serve coleslaw. I'm not trying to deprive you of your coleslaw needs, we just DON'T HAVE IT! I would love nothing more than to make everything you want magically appear, but I unfortunately do not have those powers.

Until next week's rant,
Maureen

A Community of Support

Posted by Colleen Lynch

One of the best ways to stay healthy is having support. It is much more fun to exercise with a friend or team, cook healthy meals with a loved one or even just talk about your goals to lead a healthy life with another. The experience is much more fun and you find people that are interested in the same things as you are. Also, having people around that care and stick to a healthy lifestyle with you make it easier to accomplish what you strive to do, whether it is run an upcoming road race, drop a few pounds, or just continue to be aware of your personal health.

Simmons has recently shown its support for people like us. Simmons Goes Fit was created by the Biology Liason to promote physical activity on campus. The group provides resources on a detailed website about tips to improve your physical activity, routes to take while walking or running, upcoming events such as group exercise on the quad, as well as nutritious recipes to try out. I am a huge fan of what they've done and I encourag ... more »

One with Nature

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: Since I showed my favorite photograph of all time. I have decided to show you my favorite photographer of all time, Arno Rafael Minkkinen. He makes cool pictures in nature. See and read more about him and his work.

http://www.arnorafaelminkkinen.org/welcome.html

Analysis: Minkkinen describes himself as documentary photographer and says that everything in his photography is factual. "If his hand is under water then his hand is under water." I love his style. I love how he puts himself into nature so it seems as though he is a part of it. His first top picture that I have shown actually inspired me to do this picture as a part of my weight consciousness project.....

Interpretation: His pictures look so cool! The tones, composition, distortions, different range of vantage points make all of his photographs unique. I love how his body becomes one with nature. His photographs are beautiful :)

The Reel Take: Becoming Jane

Posted by Stephanie McBain

Starring: Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters

Released in 2007

This movie takes place at the end of the 18th century and is based on the true story of Jane Austen’s life. Fans of Austen will be able to see the many similarities between her six novels and the author’s own life.

Jane lives with her parents and three siblings in the English countryside. Her family is poor, and her mother wants Jane to marry a rich man so she won’t be economically dependent on her family, and also so she can help them out. She scorns Jane’s idea of living by her pen, insisting the only way to get money is by marriage. Mrs. Austen’s dreams come true when a wealthy neighbor, Mr. Wisley, shows an interest in Jane. However, Jane can’t bring herself to marry without love, and she definitely doesn’t love Wisley. Meanwhile, the Austens’ neighbors’ cousin, Tom Lefroy, comes to stay from London. He and Jane start off mutually hating each other and arguing constantly. However, ... more »

The Necklace

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: This is a photograph by Alexandra Sanguinetti from the series, Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of their Dreams. In this series Sanguinetti photographs the same two girls during their childhood through to their young adulthood. I believe she took all the pictures in Argentina. I went to one of her lectures at BU last year and I absolutely fell in love with her photographs. Read more about her and her work and see more of her photographs. http://alessandrasanguinetti.com/

Analysis: The picture above entitled The Necklace is my favorite picture of all time. I have the poster version of it in my room. Yes, I love this picture for its aesthetic qualities. The colors are beautiful. The reds, the golds the medium blacks but I love this picture because of the relationship between the two girls.

Interpretation: In this picture I see an overweight girl with her hair pinned up, wearing a not so glamorous mu-mu like dress, touching and examining the jewels ... more »

Boston Marathon

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: I took this picture last year around Boylston Street during the Boston Marathon. I was on my way to work on Newbury Street and I was having difficulty actually getting to work because the roads were blocked off for the marathon. So I decided to take some photographs. I usually do not take pictures like these, it isn't my style of photography but for some reason I was drawn in. So I stood behind the barriers and took pictures of the handicap bike riders and the onlookers of the Boston Marathon.

Analysis: I love the composition of the photograph with the onlookers still and in focus and the driver blurry and in motion. It definitely creates a relationship between the two. I like the expression of determination on the rider’s face and the American flag blowing in the speed, it evokes a sense of patriotism.

Interpretation: I enjoy this photograph because I love the determination of the rider and the support that the onlookers are giving him. I believe the rider has a missin ... more »

For those who just want a break...

Posted by Iman Richards

Hi everyone.

Mondays are the worst. My 9 a.m. did everything it could to start my day off the wrong way. I can only hope things will get better as the hours pass.

So I thought it would be appropriate if the song of the day was Gimme Sympathy, by Metric. Because honestly, that's all I'm looking for.

Also, it's a fabulous song off their new album Fantasies, that I am PRAYING they will debut at their show friday night. (House of Blues $20). Sure to be a good time.

Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqldwoDXHKg

I hope you enjoy, and are having a better day than I am.

Until next time.

Iman
