Hi all!
I have been an avid watcher of the Biggest Loser on NBC. For those of you who don't watch. 18 obese contestants compete to become the biggest loser. For about three months they are on a ranch counting calories and exercising for hours a day. They also have to compete in various challenges.
A few weeks their challenge was to order in from various restaurants everyday. This was extremely difficult for them because they had to stick with their healthy eating.
As a culture we go out to restaurants frequently. Here are some tips to follow the next time you go out.
1. Ask the waiter to not bring over bread/chips & salsa/ or any other food item that comes complementary with the meal.
2. Always ask for dressing on the side!
3. Don't feel pressured to eat everything. Restaurant portions are very big so just ask for a doggie bag and have a delicious lunch the next day.

A friend of mine who also works in a restaurant sent me this and I thought it was only appropriate to share with my blog readers. It made me happy to know that this happens in other restaurants, not just mine. This happens way too often.

"A dozen identical Northeastern girls arrive in the middle of a rush without calling ahead and expect to be seated together in a decent amount of time:
'yeah, um can i have a honey crisp salad with no macaroni'
'can i have mine with no pepper and no tomato'
'can i have mine just like hers, but with no tomato'
'can i have a honey crisp chicken salad with grilled chicken??'
'can i have it extra dressing and an extra breadstick, please?'
...add nauseum."
To all my fellow servers who also experience this: May the force be with you.
Always serving people with a [fake] smile,
Maureen Azor

When studying I always want to reach for a quick snack. I have come up with a few simple new twists on my staple favorite, popcorn. Be sure to shop for plain unsalted popcorn or go the whole way and stove pop it. Nothing tastes or smells better than the fresh stuff. I hope you think of these the next time you're craving something sweet or salty!
Savory:
Simple Pepper and Salt Popcorn
As the title says.
Season to taste
Crabby Popcorn
Dash of salt
Dash of Old Bay Seasoning
(or Small dash of Cayenne, Paprika, and Celery Salt)

Sweet:(these are a bit more dangerous)
Cinnamon Toast Popcorn
Melt brown sugar and butter substitute

Consumption of alcohol is viewed very differently abroad than it is in the US. In many other countries drinking is a part of the culture and abusing it is disrespectful and distasteful.
Stereotypically, Americans are binge drinkers and get way too drunk. When you are in a foreign country, PLEASE do not look like a drunken idiot. Do not prove the American stereotype!
While out with my friends one night in Cusco we came across a guy who was beyond drunk outside of a bar. We tried to help him out and get him a cab back to his hotel but all he did was swear at us and deny our help. 5 minutes later he passed out on the sidewalk. My friend and a few other people proceeded to carry him to a place where people wouldn't accidentally trample him. 5 minutes later he stumbled over to the McDonald's (yes there is a McDonald's in Cusco I am sad to say) and passed out again.
I remember feeling really bad and nervous about what would happen to him. He was wasted, refusing everyone's help, and had no c ... more »

This past week I was stuck inside my apartment due to the fact that I had Swine Flu. The only thing that I wanted to eat was chicken noodle soup. My wonderful roommate made her families secret soup for me to nurse me back to health. I asked her for permission and she said that I could use it for my blog (just don't tell her grandmother).
INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken meat
1/2 pound uncooked spaghetti
4 cloves garlic
1/4 cup chopped onion
salt to taste
12 cups water
3 tablespoons olive oil
DIRECTIONS
1. In a large pot, bring the water to a boil. Add the salt and olive oil.
2. Chop up the chicken, and add it with the onion and garlic to the pot.
3. Break the spaghetti into small pieces, no longer than half the size of your pinkie; add to the pot. Stir. Let simmer over medium heat for 30 to 45 minutes.
This soup was just what the doctor ordered! Even though it was all that I ate for almost an entire week I will never get tired of it. Bon Appetite!

Want to make a pasta dish that looks hard but is actually extremely easy? Then just follow these steps and you're good to go. It is a baked pasta with ricotta and olives (very yummy way to get in all your veggies). A simple sauce gets a boost from kalamata olives, while lemon zest and Parmesan perk up ricotta cheese. Serve with baby spinach or arugula salad.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup ricotta cheese
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon grated zest from 1 lemon
Salt and pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1/2 cup kalamata olives, pitted and chopped
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
1 pound campanelle or penne pasta
DIRECTIONS
1. Adjust oven rack 7 inches from the broiler element and heat broiler. Bring 4 quarts water to boil in large pot. Grease shallow 2-quart baking dish. Combine ricotta, 1/2 cup of Parmesan, and lemon zest in medium bowl and season with salt and pepper; set aside.
2. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat until shimme ... more »

This weekend, as a late birthday present, my aunt took me to NYC to see Billy Elliot on Broadway. I absolutely love New York, so this was an amazing trip! The atmosphere is so much fun, everything stays open all night, and the sights are incredible. I’ll keep this blog to the night life, considering the fact that you probably don’t want to hear about my adventures to the statue of liberty…
We left at 6am on Saturday, and did tons of touristy things when we got there. At around 7pm we went to dinner, which is really early in NYC so we had no problem getting a table. The food was good, but food there is twice as expensive as it is here, I couldn’t get over it! If I ever decide to live there I’m going to have to start saving now and living off ramen noodles. The drinks in NYC were really great though, and it was nice to just be able to go to a bar and order something with my aunt. I felt so grown up! It’s so dorky, but I was so excited.
After we went to Billy Elliot (which ... more »

I know it was last week but I thought I would share a little bit about my Halloween weekend. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, but this one was my first as a 21-year-old, so I was more excited than ever. On Thursday my friends and I went to the Witches Brew at Our House, which was a Simmons sponsored event. It was fun, but my friends and I ended up going to Cornwalls to end the night. I had never been to either place and I liked them. They were both a bit more mellow, but that might have been because it was only Thursday night aka day 1 of our weekend-long excursion.
On Friday I headed over to a party on Comm Ave with my roommate. The party was really fun and they had pretty good decorations, so it was lots of fun. I left a bit early to head to a bar to meet up with some of my other friends. Let me just say, there is nothing funnier than getting on the T at midnight and listening to the drunken conversations of costumed college kids. I made some new friends on the trai ... more »
