Social Justice
I recently returned from the American Public Health Association annual meeting in Washington DC. It is always a trip. As one of my colleagues pointed out, “that is where all the old hippies go”, which may explain why I like it so much! With about 100 concurrent sessions at any given time it is tough to choose just the best one. The theme this year was “Policy, Politics and Public Health”. I was excited to see some previews for an upcoming PBS series
Unnatural Causes: Is inequality making us sick? to be released in March 2008. It will be a perfect fit for community health nursing. Hopefully it will also be an eye-opener for other policy makers and providers.
Another focus was on the changing climate and it’s impact on health. A good resource for those of you who interact with kids. is EcoHealth 101 Although it is designed for grade school, it is an excellent compilation of information. An important point was that the changes in the global climate will effect those who can least afford it… much like what we saw with Hurricane Katrina.
