A Moonwalk to Racism

Posted by Khalida Al-Sulaiman

As a child, I remember one of my habits was watching Michael Jackson videos after school. The songs and the performances on the tape “Thriller” became my obsession, and until today “Thriller” remains to be my favorite album. My brother and I memorized every single word in every single song and unsuccessfully tried to imitate his “moonwalk”. Furthermore I still remember when I discovered another man with Michael Jackson’s identical voice while my mother was watching CNN. I was completely confused because the man on the screen was not Michael Jackson; it was an awkward looking white man, but Michael Jackson’s name was all over the headlines. And so I asked my mother about the situation, and when I finally understood I couldn’t lift my jaw up from the floor for a few minutes. I didn’t even know that such thing was even possible. Some people say that he has a disease called Vitiligo, which causes loss of color pigmentation in the skin. I never really believed the Viti ... more »

" It don't Matter if you are BLACK OR WHITE"

Posted by Khalida Al-Sulaiman

MJ has made an influence on racism both positive and negative. When MJ turned from "black to white" many African Americans became offended because they looked up to him. Every person on this planet was shocked the moment they saw the transformation. As a kid i never really thought about racism, but when MJ "transformed" i began to ask questions to understand the whole issue. His doing gave many people a negative image about African Americans. At the same time, i was shocked to hear that some of his songs revolve about racism. The 2 songs that highlight the issue of race ( specifically about African Americans) are: "Black or White" and "They Don't Care about Us". The funny thing is that MJ is "white" in these 2 music videos and his lyrics are saying that people judge us because of our skin color; because we are "black".

The Power of Artists and Musicians

Posted by Khalida Al-Sulaiman

Artists and musicians have a big influence in our world, and sometimes we don't even notice it. We tend to get lost listening to a song or staring at a painting without knowing what's the story behind it. It is amazing because not only are they giving us something "nice" to listen to or something "pretty" to look at, but they are sharing their stories and hopes. Which artist or musician made an impact on you?

"Yellow" by Coldplay

Posted by Khalida Al-Sulaiman

Yesterday everyone around the world celebrated the day of love... Valentine's Day. Artists and musicians are big contributers to the concept of love. When we meet someone interesting we tend to listen to love songs over and over again, and actually listen to the words instead of just mumbling with the tune. John Legend, one of my favorite musicians has made the greatest love songs. My favorite 2 songs by Legend are:"PDA(We Just Don't Care)" and "Save Room". Meanwhile; the greatest love story is that of Chris Martin and Gwenyth Paltrow. After meeting Paltrow in a gathering, Martin dedicated a song to Paltrow called "yellow" in 2000. He then invited her to the first concert in which he performed that song. And that is how their love story began.

Music Lightens up the Oscars

Posted by Khalida Al-Sulaiman

The Oscars is the biggest night in Hollywood. I was happy to see Kate Winslet finally getting the Best Actress Oscar, Sean Penn the Best Actor Oscar, and Slumdog Millionaire winning 8 Oscars. The music lightened up the night by performances by Beyonce , Hugh Jackman ,and other stars. The best moment of the night was the performances in honor of WALL-E and Slumdog Millionaire. The cast of Slumdog were very passionate in receiving the awards and celebrated with positive energy that hit us from the TV screens.

As I stated in my last post, Ellen is making a bathroom singing competition. My friend has a good voice and so we decided to make a video and send it to Ellen's website. If you are a big fan of the Beatles or if you enjoyed watching Across the Universe, then you will definitely like this.
