As you know there are a million different diet plans out in the world today. With the exception of a few they don't work.
While it is best to just lose weight the old fashion way by exercising and eating right many people still fall into the habit of these fad diets. Here are the top three diets to avoid:
1. Detox Diets- Diets that literally clear you out. You can do this through pills or liver flushes. Not only will you clear out your system but you'll clear out the room as well. I call this the friends loving you from a distance diet.
2. Fasting or low-calorie diets- Not only are you hungry all the time but your metabolism slows down therefore ultimately gaining weight.
3. Diets that only focus on a certain food item- For example the grapefruit diet, cayenne red pepper diet, raw food diets. At first these diets are effective but then you return to your regular eating habits and gorge yourself on all the foods you have missed out on.

Hi all!
I have been an avid watcher of the Biggest Loser on NBC. For those of you who don't watch. 18 obese contestants compete to become the biggest loser. For about three months they are on a ranch counting calories and exercising for hours a day. They also have to compete in various challenges.
A few weeks their challenge was to order in from various restaurants everyday. This was extremely difficult for them because they had to stick with their healthy eating.
As a culture we go out to restaurants frequently. Here are some tips to follow the next time you go out.
1. Ask the waiter to not bring over bread/chips & salsa/ or any other food item that comes complementary with the meal.
2. Always ask for dressing on the side!
3. Don't feel pressured to eat everything. Restaurant portions are very big so just ask for a doggie bag and have a delicious lunch the next day.

So I bet that after this weekend many people feel a little well... fat. Delicious/fatty/sugary candy in combination with highly caloric alcoholic beverages have not sat well with most peoples waist lines come Monday morning.
Have no fear Shea is here!
You can't change this weekend but you can jump start your week with some exercise and healthy eating!
Start your day of with a healthy breakfast and a brisk walk for about 20 minutes to get that metabolism going. Trust me by lunch you'll feel a little better about yourself.
For breakfast try a breakfast split:
1/2 cup of vanilla, 1/2 cup of strawberry yogurt, 1/4 cup of crunchy cheerios on top of a banana will curb that sweet tooth of yours.
And remember if you get off the exercise and healthy eating track its so easy to just get right back on.

Halloween is a fun time in New England. Especially in the Boston area. Salem is just a short commuter train ride away and there are so many things to do in the area.
The darker side of Halloween is the food. Candy apples, mountains of candy, and tons of other delicious but really fatty foods. Here are some tips that can help you through this holiday.
1. Don't buy candy until the day of Halloween for those trick or treaters!
2. Buy candy you don't like so you won't be tempted to eat it.
3. When going to a party eat before you go.
4. Choose a seat away from the snack table.
5. Work out before you go out!
Have a Happy Halloween!

Choices, choices, choices.
Everyday we are faced with many choices. Some may be as minute as "Should I wear the blue or the red sweater?" or "Where should I go to grad school?".
When dealing with food we make many choices as well, some of them not being the healthiest of choices.
Here are some simple healthy choices that you can make everyday.
1. Instead of a glass of whole while try almond milk with only 120 calories per glass!
2. Try to nix the canned fruit and vegetables it is loaded with sugary syrup. Try to stick with fresh fruit and vegetables or try frozen food.
3. If your weakness is sweet frozen treats why not suck on a sugar free Popsicle or sorbet instead of ice cream.
4. Loaded Nachos your thing? Choose multi-grain tortilla chips and salsa or fresh guacomole over cheese nachos.
Healthy substitutes like these can really make a difference when trying to get into your skinny jeans!

One of the main reasons many college students are overweight is because they don't have any portion control.
When at the Bartol we have heaping spoonfuls of mashed potatoes or go to the Edy's ice cream machine and fill up a cereal bowl until it overflows. This is a problem.
While it is a problem it does not mean that it can't be fixed.
First you must realize that your stomach is about the size of two fists so when you get 3 trays of food maybe that isn't the best thing to do to your poor overworked stomach.
When eating protein you it shouldn't be more than the palm of your hand. Green veggies and salads you can eat more of (obvi!) and should be the size of two fists. While starchy items such as potatoes or rice should be about one tightly clenched fist.
Hope these tips helped you out.
Happy Eating!

As college students we don't have any free time. The occasional free time that does come around usually consists of sleeping or catching on the homework that we missed.
There is no time for exercising!
So how do we burn those excess calories? There are simple everyday activities that can be performed.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
When working at your computer sit on a stability ball.
Practice your posture at your desk.
Walk to the furthest bathroom from your dorm room.
Instead of using a remote control walk up to the television to change the station.
When going out with friends instead of going to the movies or to dinner do something active. It's autumn so try apple picking! Apples are a tasty and nutritious snack!
Don't get discouraged by not exercising just follow these simple steps and you WILL see a difference in your weight.

As college students everyday we are faced with temptation concerning alcohol. Alcohol is extremely fattening. The combination of being consumed in large portions and late in the evening can only add up to a larger waistline.
Just like fatty foods alcohol is fine to drink in moderation for those that are over 21.
There are some simple tips that can be followed to cut calories while going out. According to Cosmopolitan magazine simply by replacing white wine for wine spritzer saves 60 calories. A frozen margarita that is typically 350 calories can be replaces by a margarita on the rocks that is 150 calories.
Stay away from bar food! Half a handful of mixed nuts is 490 calories! Nix the nuts and order some chips and fresh salsa which is less calories than guacamole.
The key to going out is drinking responsibly. The more sugar in your drink the more fattening it is. Vodka soda are 97 calories compared to vodka tonics 170 calories.
So the next time you go out skip the sugar drinks and yo ... more ยป

Hi everyone!
This is my first entry of my first blog. How exciting?!
In this blog I want to concentrate on weight and college students especially female students, obviously.
Today everything is centered around how you look and weight is a huge part of that. I have had issues with my weight for a very long time. Although I have never been extremely heavy I still have sometimes been uncomforatble with it.
In this blog I want to uncover simple ways for college women to stay fit and eat healthy.
Can't wait to start this journey.
