Music is important in ads, too

Posted by Shannon Brown

So recently, I have been trying to figure out how I could possibly break into the music supervision industry. Then, I thought, maybe ads could do it.

Let's be honest, the songs in ads make a big difference. Has a commercial ever made you cry? You can bet the song in it had something to do with it.

Commercials can also help launch the careers of the artists used in them. I bet the Submarines are way more popular now that their song, “You, Me, and the Bourgeoisie” has been used in about 10 iPhone commercials.

That is really the part I am interested in. Also, I feel like if more international songs were used in commercials, it might encourage more cultural competency. We can always use some more of that : )

Here are some links to some of my favorite songs that have recently been featured in commercials. Can you think of what they are in the ad for?

Away We Go is the Best Music Video EVER!

Posted by Shannon Brown

Did anyone see ?Away We Go?

Not only was it written by one of my favorite writers - Dave Eggers - but is kind of the world's greatest music video ever too.

Almost all the music heard in the movie is by the amazing Alexi Murdoch! It was incredible how the people who made the movie got every scene to work not only with his voice and his words, but transform the distance Alexi gives in his music and create and intimacy with the scene in the movie and the sound. For me, it was a total transformation.

Sondre Lerche, my favorite Norweigan folk singer, tried to do the same thing in movie Dan in Real Life. But it just didn't work.

The Signature song for "Away We Go", a film about a couple searching for a place to raise their baby, was "All My Days" by far.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

will dailey!!!!

Posted by Shannon Brown

So, I really have to thank Will Dailey for introducing me to music supervision.

I am a big fan and when I first started hearing his songs on TV shows, like CSI New York, I wanted to find out more and figured it all out. Also, he is the first artists who was signed to a TV label – CBS records – for the main purpose of being able to use his songs in their TV shows. Interesting, right?

What?! You don’t know who Will Dailey is?!??? I’ll tell you who he is! He’s your next favorite singer who sings your next favorite song…Obviously!

Enjoy.

The godmother of music(supervision)

Posted by Shannon Brown

Alexandra Patsavas, the woman who makes OK TV shows and movies great (or at least sound great) is pretty much the godmother of music supervision. She is responsible for popularizing artists like Will Dailey, Coconut records, and The Virgins. She has done the music for Madmen, Twilight, and Gossip Girl, just to name a few. She has been featured in several magazines and interviewed for TV. She is the most, and maybe the only, famous music supervisor today.

Please enjoy a sampling of her work!

A look into the world of music supervision

Posted by Shannon Brown

Hey all!

So, one of my hundreds of dream jobs is to become a music supervisor, otherwise know as the person who picks the songs to be used in movies. I first discovered that the profession existed while reading an old Rolling Stone on a train from Munich to Amsterdam at the end of 2007. The article featured an interview from Alexandra Patsavas, probobly the most famous music supervisor out there. She is the reason all the cool kids in your high school started listening to good music. She did the music for the O.C. and now does it for Gossip Girl and Grey’s. Feel free to check her out. http://chopshopmusic.com/

The article caught my attention because it mentioned Will Dailey, the brother of one of my best friend’s from Simmons. www.willdailey.com He is signed to CBS records, a label the network created in order to have great music on its shows. Even if you haven’t heard of Will, chances are, if you watch TV, you’ve heard his music.

Basically, what I would love to do as a music s ... more »
