**Mac OS X 10.5: Unable to log in to account after an upgrade install**

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

**
This is one of the many reasons why I am not a fan of "upgrading' from one version of an Operating System to another. Successive upgrades can and do run into issues like this. Some are easily fixable some are not.

Mac OS X 10.5: Unable to log in to account after an upgrade install
Issue or symptom

You may not be able to log in with a user account that has a password of 8 or more characters and was originally created in Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier, after performing an upgrade installation of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (the default installation type).

This will effect "local" accounts only, not network authenticated accounted.

Leopard eLearning Initial Testing

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

**eLearning - Safari Browser Initial Testing**

Check Browser Results: Browser Check: Failed - non-validated or unsupported, Safari version unknown

(This was expected as Safari 3.0.4 (Released with Leopard) is not a certified browser)

Cookies Check: Passed

Javascript Check: Passed

Pop-up Window Check: Failed - Pop-up Windows are not enabled

Safari 3.0.4 has pop-up windows blocked by default. This is a change. Blocking pop-ups has been an "all or notheing" option is Safari, but it has not been the default setting.

To change this: Go to File Menu --> Safari -->)You will see that "Block Pop-up Windows" has a check mark by it.) Just click on "Block Pop-up Windows" to diable Pop-up blocking. The Pop-Up Windows check will then pass.

Java Check: (**MY ALL TIME FAVORITE**) PASSES. Version 1.5.0_13 In terms of eLearning this is an excellent thing. I did test the Java 6 beta that came out earlier this year, it passed the check but key features in eLearning (HTML Editor and Chat) wer ... more »

Apple is starting to ship Leopard only computers

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

Apple has started to ship "Leopard Only" hardware.

This was expected behavior for Apple. The Generic OS installation DVD media that Simmons receives as part of its Maintenance Agreement with Apple *should* be installable on this new hardware. This has been noted for future testing.

From: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306766

MacBook (Late 2007): About the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation disk
The Mac OS X 10.5 installation disk that shipped with your MacBook (13-inch Late 2007) is designed for use on this computer only and not intended for any other computer.

The installer prevents this software from being installed on other Macintosh computers and other Mac OS X 10.5 installation disks will not work on the MacBook (13-inch Late 2007).

Leopard Dock Weirdness

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

Having dock on the left- side of the screen is causing strange things to happen. iTunes will not maximize, programs will stop responding.

I moved the dock location back to the bottom of the screen and the unresponsiveness ceased.

I do know that the dock is rendered differently when it is not on the bottom of the screen. I will be looking into this more in the next day or two.

Leopard Migrating Keychains

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

The newly released Leopard O/S has a completely revamped Keychain sub-system.

If you try to migrate your "keychain" to Leopard. It may not work.

Try resetting your keychain which is documented in the following knowledgebase article from Apple:

Changing Profile Icon

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

To replace the Shark icon in your blog profile:

Make sure that your replacement has the following characteristics:

-Is a .jpg
-is sized 48x48
-is less than 80kb

.tiff files will not work

If you need to adjust the size of the image, or change its format, use Photoshop.

1. Open the file in Photoshop
2. Go to the Image file menu item and choose Image Size from the drop down list
3. Uncheck "Constrain Proportions" at the bottom of the dialog box. (Not all photos and icons are perfect little squares)
4. Go back to the top of the dialog box and change the Pixel Dimensions to Width: 48 and Height: 48
5. Click OK
6. Choose File --> Save As from the File Menu, before you click "Save" make sure that the "Format:" is JPEG. Other file types might work, I am not an expert at this.

Parallels Desktop for Macintosh

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

The makers of Parallels Desktop have announced that only the latest version of their virtualization software should be run in the new Mac OS Leopard. They cited a "list of issues" that they were working to fix, but did not explicitly list them.

Issues that I have experienced in Leopard running Windows XP in Parallels: -Unexpectedly quitting about every 5-10 minutes -No drag and drop capability between Parallels and Mac -Unstable ethernet connection on a laptop that has both wired and wireless ethernet capability. This was really annoying. By the time I could get a stable wired ethernet connection and tried to log into needed college resources, Parallels would quit.

A beta fix has been posted. Use at your own risk! Beta software is pre-release and is not supported by Parallels.

http://www.parallels.com/en/download/desktop/beta/

I have downloaded and installed it, but have not yet tested anything.

Leopard Boot Camp & rEFIt issues

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

Installing Leopard "cleanly" did not upgrade BootCamp to v2 Annoying. I would think that the installer would be "smart enough". Boot Camp 1.2 was a beta that should have "timed out" (expired) on the day that Leopaerd was released, but my laptop will still boot to Windows.

rEFIt is a 3rd party utility that interrupts the startup sequaence and allows the user to shoose what OS to startup to.

Installing rEFIt v.10 has caused a bit of instability. The Mac always boots, but sometimes you see the rEFIt screen and sometimes you do not.

Its behavior also does not mimic what used to happen.

What used to be: The mac would startup to O/S that it last started up to unless told to do otherwise.

My experience with the new refit and Leopard has been that the mac will always startup to the mac even though I booted to windows in the previous bootup.

I wonder if the behavior is related to the "timed out" Boot Camp v1.2.

This entry is also noted for further testing.

Looking for websites to help with Macintosh problems?

Posted by Janice Canero-Conklin

Here is a list of websites to help resolve Macintosh related problems:

Not too "techy" sites:

http://www.macosxhints.com/
http://www.apple.com/support/
http://macfixit.com
http://forum.onmac.net/ (Windows XP on Intel Macs)

This site is good for purchasing hardware based parts and it has really good "how-to" videos and a troubleshooting section.

http://www.ifixit.com

This is not an endorsement for the above sites, so "user beware"...
