last weekend was another pretty lucy-less weekend...unfortunately. because it was halloween and because i work in a toy store that sells costumes i had to be at the store A TON. but it was good fun.

this year i decided to make my costume. i was a hammerhead shark. thank god everyone recognized me. on saturday at work (boing in jp) we had a visit from mayor menino. he liked my costume. we also gave out candy for three grueling hours outside of the store. everyone loved my costume and some lady even took my picture.

after work i raced north to windham, new hampshire to attend a halloween part with all of my friends. everyone looked great. my favorite costume was my friend brodsky, who dressed as the bear jew from inglorious basterds. it was epic.

here is a photo stolen from a friend on facebook:

this weekend was ridiculously busy so there wasn't much time for puppy hangouts so i'm just going to blog about what i did yesterday.

my friends from back home (merrimack valley, ma) are super tight-knit. when our friends' band, late nite wars (myspace.com/latenitewars), got chosen to play with new found glory in burlington, vermont we all rushed to buy our tickets. yesterday was the big day. my friends erin, krystal and i started on the road around 12:30pm. the weather was amazing and the foliage was out of control. we were making awesome time. having lmfao / saves the day / reggie / piebald singalongs all the way there. we got pulled over in vermont about 3 miles from our exit. woops. first we met up with some friends at the magic hat brewery. which i now consider heaven on earth. we sampled every beer they had on tap, twice...maybe three times. from there we headed to nectars, an awesome bar / restaurant / venue in downtown burlington for grub and $2 drafts of longtrail and magic ha ... more »

last weekend my mom went away so i was puppy-sitting. i basically took lucy everywhere. she got to hang out at my apartment in the city, i took her for a walk in the woods with a friend, she came to a house party / show with me in new hampshire and everyone loved her. she actually ate all of my friend's fish food. woops.

the best time was taking her to a brewery in sturbridge to see my friend's dad's band play. they're a grateful dead coverband called "lobsterz from marz" and have been together for 26 years. they're obviously rockstars. lucy had fun. she tried to play with goats and every little kid there was running up to pet her, i had treats on hand they could give her. moms were taking pictures. on top of that, the beer and tunes and weather and atmosphere were amazing!

oh lucy is definitely way stronger than ever. she can jump up on my bed now and steals cookies off of the counter. my mom and i got her a winter coat. she hates it and tries to eat it.

puppy fest.

sunday felt like the longest day in the world. my mom and i took lucy to the dog park in derry where she played with a million dogs and harassed a pair of angry chihuahuas. then i brought her to my friend's house to meet her doggy soul-mate penny lane. they played for a bit in a fenced in playground behind my friend's house, then another puppy pal, rocky, showed up. at only 4 months old, rocky weighs 35lbs (the same as lucy). as an american bulldog, he's a bulldozer with legs, and growing bigger by the second. after that i brought lucy to another friend's house, no other dogs this time, but she spent the whole night cuddling my friend aaron. i think she's in love. at one point her favorite squeaky-toy noise was featured on a tv commercial, and mid-snore she hopped off the couch trying to find the source of the noise. on our way out the door she apparently thought she was already outside and peed in the house. woops. but i was afraid to yell at her because when you raise your voice at h ... more »

bears at the dog park.

my brother came to visit from d.c. this weekend and he met lucy for the first time. he accompanied us to the dog park in derry. while we were there, about 100 yards away under a bench lay what could have been anything; from a bear to an oversized blanket or rug. my brother wandered over to inspect and called me from his hiding spot..."it's not moving, but i think it's breathing, biggest thing i've ever seen...no idea what it..." and then i hung up on him and wandered up to find the BIGGEST dog i have ever seen. it was a newfoundland named chumley. 180+ pounds of fur and webbed feet. apparently they were bred to be super docile and will swim in any water as long as it's not frozen. and they drool about a hundred gallons a day. they look like this:

and for good measure, lucy on the way home from the dog park, passed out and covered in dust / drool:

i'm the "mom?"

Posted by Kelsey Coughlin

living in the city and only being able to see lucy on the weekends is frustrating. i have to make sure that whenever i go home i hang out with her a ton and bring her everywhere. thankfully she's pretty great at hanging out.

this past weekend when i was home my mom decided that i'm the "mom" and she's the "grandmother." not totally sure how i feel about this, but i guess it's a step up from when i was my last dog's "sister?" sort of weird.

we've been taking lucy to the dog park a ton. she loves it. it is seriously a scene out of lady and the tramp. tons of dogs running everywhere from teacup poodles to great danes. i've never seen anything like it. owners just mill around smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee, chatting with one another while their dogs romp at their feet. on any given day at the dog park there's at least one bully and one dog that decides to mount every single other dog (and the occasional person) there. i seriously LOVE the dog park. it's hilarious. lucy was terrif ... more »

lucy in the sky with diamonds

i've always had dogs growing up. between february 2006, when my last pup had to be euthanized, until september 11th, 2009, was the longest my family has gone without man's best friend. since late spring my mom and i have spent countless hours scouring petfinder and various animal shelter websites for potential dogs. often our varying tastes led to disagreements. i've always favored large, muscular dogs with square jaws, compared to my mom's preference of small, furry lap dogs. there seemed to be no happy medium in sight until we met seikuya.

coming home from school on september 4th i decided to make a pit stop at the mspca in jamaica plain. seikuyah had already been there for about a month, but on my previous visits i had always bypassed her kennel in favor of other dogs. however, that day i decided to take seikuyah out for a walk, despite her almost unpronouncable name. apparently it means "sky." she captured my heart with her first lopsided romp in one of the fenced in yards. i found ... more »
