Gum Surgery

Posted by Julia Devine

Apparently I am not the only one surprised that I have kept this blog up for this long. Well, I have another fun and refreshing story to tell! I am going to tell you about another oral surgery I underwent. I had gum surgery done when I was about 16 years old. As you have probably noticed I am pretty anal about my teeth. I still wear my retainer to bed every night and I make sure to floss and brush regularly (let’s hope). Apparently I used to brush my teeth a little too hard (Note- ONLY use soft toothbrushes) because my gum line started to recede so I had to have reconstructive surgery before it got any worse. I was 16 at the time and my father was having the same surgery done in the same week. (He’s about 30 years older than me). Once again my father had a fantastic experience while I had a terrible one. My doctor was super creepy and he basically butchered my mouth. I still have terrible scarring. They basically cut skin from the roof of your mouth and stitch it ... more »

Don't Look At This If You Have A Weak Stomach!

Posted by Julia Devine

Just figured I would post a few pictures about wisdom tooth stuff. Some of it's funny, some of it's gross, and some of it is actually helpful, but seriously don't look at this if you're squeemish!

This is an actual photo X-ray and you can actually see the little arrows pointing at the wisdom teeth. (Neither of them look to be impacted).

wisdom

This is absurd (One way of reducing the swelling I guess you could say!)

wisdom weird

This is what you are going to look like during the procedure!

wisdomtooth

I told you not to look! Fair warning. See how deep the hole is?

gross

Although this does not appear impacted, it's still going to be a bitch to get out and heal. This will definitely leave a mark.

pain

This perfectly shows the nerve. The nerve is very close and sometimes at the root of the wisdom tooth. If your doctor does a crappy job (or the nerve is too close to the wisdom tooth) then you will probably get dry sockets. It is when the nerve is left openly exposed. I had this, wasn't fun.

This is cute. I am such a dork, ... more »

Preparation for you BIG day!

Posted by Julia Devine

It has nothing to do with your wedding, or prom, or anything overly exciting, but I figured it would be a good idea to discuss how to prepare for any type of oral surgery. However, for the sake of this blog, I think I’ll just stick to prepping for wisdom tooth extraction. The day before I had my wisdom teeth out I was a complete idiot. I went out and partied, drank too much, puffed a few too many, and woke up the next day (bright and early) with a fantastic hangover. I recovered by the time I got to the doctor’s office, but it was still a poor choice on my part. Basically, the day before any surgery you should always: Get a good night sleep Don’t smoke Don’t drink Eat a good meal the night before, but make sure you don’t eat, or drink, anything the day of surgery. That’s basically how you choke and die under general anesthesia. Wear comfortable clothing Remove all jewelry And basically get ready for lounging around and doing absolutely nothing the next few days!

Doctors

Posted by Julia Devine

A big part of oral surgery is choosing the right doctor. As I have always said, "A dentist is just a doctor that never made it." Well in regards to my "orange doctor” I can truthfully say he was more like the, "Oral surgeon that never made plastic surgeon." Don’t get me wrong, I have been infamously known to use fake tanner, so I’m not hating on orange people, but the orange doctor was pretty much a douche. Any person you are actually paying to pull teeth should never be disrespectful their customer. This doctor was not disrespectful to me, but more so to the person footing the bill: my mother. I have never wanted to punch a pompous jackass more than when he spoke down to my mother, rolled his eyes at her, interrupted her, and continued to have a hissy fit when she had a few questions. (Of course this took place after I had my teeth removed so there was nothing I could do). So far, I have spoken about the pompous, orange doctor and the drunken on-call doctor (fr ... more »

Laughing Gas

Posted by Julia Devine

“Now pretty soon you are going to start feeling a tingling sensation in your toes and the tips of your fingers.” That’s right, laughing gas. If you are a stranger to laughing gas then you probably have no idea what I am talking about. If you do, you have to admit it’s pretty awesome. Laughing gas (also known as nitrous oxide) is commonly used as a sedative for minor or major surgeries. I have only had one tooth fall out on its own accord. It was my first tooth to fall out EVER and I remember it fell out at the post office. I was so excited to go home and show my mom. Anyways, every other tooth besides my first has been forcefully removed. Two of them were knocked out by my Dad *BY MISTAKE* and the rest were pulled out. I have very deep roots mind you! The experience was never fun, but I always loved going to the dentist because I knew every single time I went they would want to pull another tooth out and I would get juiced up with laughing gas before they did it. I had a pink ... more »

Secret Girlfriend

Posted by Julia Devine

All right this is a bit different then my blog about oral surgery, but I had to take a quick time-out to express my dismay about a new show on comedy central. It’s called “Secret Girlfriend” and I am actually ashamed to admit I watched it. To tell you the truth it was one of those nights where I was doing my homework and casually letting the TV switch from show to show. Well the season premier of “Secret Girlfriend” turned on after South Park. I had seen commercials for this new show and it looked pretty pathetic, but I was curious. The commercials implied it was a show all about attractive women being dumbed down and objectified, but I was sure there had to be more to the plot than this. Well there wasn’t. It’s basically a show where the viewer IS the main (male) character of the show. Every feasible female hits on him while there are constant shots of women’s breasts and asses because that’s apparently all men look at! It’s an interesting idea to have the viewer f ... more »

The Healing of my Wisdomous Holes

Posted by Julia Devine

I guess one could say the worst part of the wisdom tooth experience is the healing. I know everyone has different healing experiences. Anything and everything that could have ever gone wrong during the healing process happened to me. However, I know my brother was up and about the next day. 4 weeks later and I am still healing from the wisdom tooth extraction. I have slowly weaned myself off of Advil, but I can still feel the extreme sensitivity around my wisdomous holes. On the third day of having my wisdom teeth out I developed dry sockets. Dry sockets are when the blood clot does not heal properly thus leaving the nerve openly exposed. It’s pretty damn painful! The night before this I started feeling extremely ill. I was vomiting every 2 hours, then every hour, then every half hour. All that was coming out was a bright red fluid. I was pretty freaked out to say the least. I was ghostly pale with sunken eyes and large chipmunk cheeks. I certainly was a sight for sore e ... more »

The day of my wisdom tooth extraction

Posted by Julia Devine

When I first went in for my consultation I was not in the least bit nervous. The assistant was an older woman who was very nice. I didn’t have to wait very long for the doctor to come in. The overly tanned (orange) doctor in his late thirties had a huge, white grin on his face. His pompous attitude didn’t bother me in the least. He seemed to know what he was talking about. A week later I went in for another appointment. This time I was supposed to have my wisdom teeth removed. I was slightly more nervous this time, but I didn't let it get to me until I was sitting in the chair as they were prepping. I suddenly realized this was a bigger ordeal then I previously assumed. They started placing small monitors all over my body. I started to freak out. I don’t mind piercing needles or tattoos, but when it comes to medical needles I freak. I started crying. Yea I’m actually a wimp. They started placing needles in my arms for the IV and anesthesia. They then turned the heart monitor on ... more »

Oral Surgery: Wisdom Teeth!

Posted by Julia Devine

I'm sure most of you have already had this procedure done, or you plan to have it done. Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most common oral surgeries. Lucky for me I just had mine removed. I know it may be a bit late, but at least I didn’t wait till I was 54 to get mine done. *Sorry for the age drop dad!* However, when my father had his wisdom teeth extracted he only had two and neither of them were impacted. (An impacted wisdom tooth is when the tooth is all the way or partially below the gum line and is unable to properly erupt). This is very common. The tooth may be growing in horizontal, sideways, crooked... You get the picture. Anyways, my dad actually went to work right after he had the procedure done! On the other hand I was not so lucky. The only part of this procedure that I was lucky about was the fact that I had the condition called "hypodontia" or as I like to say I’m just slightly more evolved. I only had 3 wisdom teeth instead of 4. Basically everyone handles th ... more »

Oral Surgery

Posted by Julia Devine

Always use protection. Get your mind out of the gutter. That’s not what this blog is about! I'm talking about oral surgery. Nowadays doctors are a bit too trigger happy and are willing to do just about anything to get you under the knife. That’s why I insist always use protection! People, including myself, never consult a second doctor before getting a mouth procedure done. Just because the surgery is taking place in your mouth doesn’t mean it’s not an invasive surgery! That’s why I have decided to create this blog. Recently I have undergone mouth surgery which didn’t go exactly as planned. I have had many surgeries done to my mouth and now that I think of it absolutely NONE of them have gone as I had planned. That’s why I’m making this blog for anyone who is thinking about oral surgery, has undergone oral surgery, or who has questions about oral surgery. I would love to hear your horror or success stories! Each week I will be posting something new. Anything from my own ... more »
