Movie Night

Posted by Victoria Ross

This past weekend was a total chill out weekend for me and my two roommates. All three of us vowed after a busy week that we would just hang out, clean, and watch movies all weekend. Today I am writing my blog on this great movie we watched. So on Friday night we all gathered together and made old fashioned popcorn on the stove and rented The Proposal with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. The movie was absolutely wonderful! Sometimes it is difficult for the three of us to agree on the movie because all have such a diverse taste in movies. However, The Proposal really had something for all of us. Throughout the course of the one hour and forty minutes, we laughed, cried and screamed at the storyline and plot. I would recommend this movie to everyone even if you don't think this type of movie is your scene, I would still give it a try. If nothing else draws you to watch it, remember that the entire movie was shot in Boston and Gloucester, Mass. And yes the movie isn't supposed ... more »

MICE MICE MICE!!

Posted by Victoria Ross

So it is official...we have mice! If you remember in my first blog I talked about my traumatic experience of finding a small little dying mouse in my kitchen the morning after a great concert with my best friends. Well on Halloween, another little mouse was found by my roommates. The little guy was just staring at her while she was relaxing in her bed. EWWW!!!! Of course she starting screaming which led me to start screaming even though I was all the way in the living room watching a movie. I knew as soon as I heard the screams what was going on. A mouse. Halloween was a rough time for me. I immediately had a panic attack knowing there was a little creature running around my apartment. My roommate had to carry me while I was crying to the bathroom so I could brush my teeth! I know it is stupid to have your greatest fear be a tiny little mouse but it is my fear. I can't help that I had a bad experience with a mouse when I was young. Ever since then I am petrified of mice. I ... more »

Dinner Parties

Posted by Victoria Ross

So my roommates and I have been talking about having a dinner party with some of our friends for about a month now. Finally we have started to get the ball rolling as far as ideas and serious planning go. So far we have a couple themes that we really think would be a success.

1. Wine and Cheese Party We are thinking that we could just have a few close friends come over for a nice low key but sophisticated dinner party. We could have a couple bottles of wine and a wide range of different types of gourmet cheeses and crackers. We could also have a platter made with fresh fruit and some nice greek yogurt to dip the fruit into. We would like the dress to be a little more formal since the theme is a little more upscale and proper. We also think this party should be either early in the evening or late at night since the food will be light.

2. Thanksgiving Dinner Party Another idea that we have come up with is to prepare a thanksgiving dinner the weekend before we all go home for Thanks ... more »

Tis' the fall season for apple picking!

Posted by Victoria Ross

So this weekend my roommates and I traveled to Amesbury, MA to go apple picking at one of my favorite childhood places, Cider Hill Farm. While at the farm we got 3 HUGE bags of apples, 3 gallons of cider and 2 dozen cider donuts! When we got home we started think what we could do with all these apples since they could barely fit in our already stuffed fridge. I remembered this great recipe my mom has for making low-cal apple crisp. We all quickly ran to the store to get the ingredients we needed. My roommates were a little hesitant about my recipe but as I expected, they have enjoyed every bit of this substitute apple crisp!

If you would like to stay warm with this tasty treat but save a few calories here is the recipe! I promise it is a hit!

Low-Cal Splenda Apple Crisp:

Filling: 2 pounds firm baking apples, (about 5 medium peeled), cored and cut into 1/4-inch slices 2 tablespoons orange juice 1 SPLENDA QUICK PACK No Calorie Sweetener Pouches 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/2 ... more »

Takeout Night: My Favorite Night of the Week

Posted by Victoria Ross

Takeout.... a favorite word among college students. Not in the mood to cook but really hungry. It sounds like a perfect time to get those menus you have been accumulating outside the apartment buildings throughout the semester. At my apartment we have a designated "takeout folder" were all our favorite menus sit and wait for the exciting night when all of us are ready for a splurg!

We are lucky to live in Boston where we are surrounded by thousands of wonderful restaurants. Here are a few favs my roommates and I have already visited:

Hidyans- a small little cafe down the street from Fenway. They offer delicious items from pizza to salads to authentic hummus and falafel wraps! The best part about Hidyans is the fat free fro-yo they sell with offer 30 different mixins to create an amazing frosty treat!

Il Mundo- located on Huntington Ave., Il Mundo has the best pizza I have found so close to my apartment. My roommates and I have a joke that we could live off of their buffalo chick ... more »

Grocery Shopping 101

Posted by Victoria Ross

I think we have finally mastered the art of grocery shopping. After almost a month in the apartment we have probably made our way over to Shaws about a dozen times. All three of us are known among our friends as big eaters who LOVE to cook. This whole summer we all joked about how we can't go to the store with each other because we will buy everything in sight. The first week we would all take the trip down the street to Shaws with our reusable grocery bags. We would buy organic chicken for chicken parm, ground meat for taco salads, pesto penne and rice and beans for an authentic Nicaraguan cuisine that my roommate specializes in. We were obsessed with cooking and shopping for our favorite meals!

Three weeks later...we are broke! No more gourmet meals with the roomies...we are now sticking to Annie's macaroni & cheese and Ramen Noodles! But we are hopeful that one day we can return to our homeland and begin creating our fabulous meals for all to admire!

Housewarming Celebration

Posted by Victoria Ross

It's almost the time we have been waiting for...our housewarming party! It has been exactly three weeks from today when the three of us moved into our apartment. Right when we moved in we decided to give it a couple of weeks before hosting a party with our friends to introduce us to the new place. Well this weekend the housewarming open house celebration begins! We are welcoming our friends Friday-Sunday to come and "christian" the place.

So time to get ready for the big weekend. So far we have cleaned the bathroom (who knows why that matters), mopped our floor and vacuumed off our futon for out of town guests! And tonight we started our latest project which is painting! We painted our long hallway a pale yellow and my creative roommate even came up with the idea to paint a thick stripe of pretty light green along the wall in the living room behind the couch. The stripe looks so great I think I'm going to paint a similar black stripe in my bedroom tomorrow! I will post picture ... more »

College Life in a Boston Apartment!

Posted by Victoria Ross

This year I'm lucky enough to have moved out of the Simmons dorms and into a gorgeous apartment with my two friends, Jacqueline and Kim. All last semester the three of us searched and searched for a perfect little place we could call home. Finally we all decided on a cute "garden level" place on Park Drive (a nice three minute walk to the academic buildings!) This past summer I have been anxiously waiting for our September 1st move in day. I was just looking forward to a place to call my own with my two good friends.

We have been living on Park Drive for a couple weeks now and there have already been some unforgettable memories created in apartment B2. Everything from former tenants not wanting to move out, to building large amounts of furniture, food shopping for three very hungry growing girls, to finding our first little furry mouse friend squeaking in a trap at 7:30 a.m. on a rainy Saturday morning! So far I can tell this is going to be a crazy year! This blog will be dedi ... more »
