Hi everyone! My name is Caitlin Smith and I'm going to be writing about advertisements for travel. Mostly for airlines, hotels and destinations.
I love advertising and love to look at ads and see if they are effective or not and why, especially in the current economic situation where many people are not traveling as much. So that’s what I’ll be doing throughout the semester. I hope you find it interesting!
Stay tuned for future updates!

Want to spend 6 months traveling on the northern coast of Australia? Want to do it for free?
Last year Tourism Queensland ran a contest to find an “Island Caretaker.” A new position created to promote the Islands that run along the Great Barrier Reef in northern Australia. The ad campaign called for people interested in the position to submit a 60 second video which was then voted on by the public via the Tourism Australia website. More than 34,000 people from across the globe submitted applications but only one could be chosen. Ben Southall was chosen as the winner and has since been traveling all over the beautiful coastline, experiencing a truly Aussie adventure, scuba diving at the reef, trying local cuisines and local flavors, and then blogging about it.
With the success of the first campaign in January 2009, in August they started a new campaign to be Ben’s helpers, again participants were asked to submit a video to compete to travel on a shorter 4-6 week trip with 3 mate ... more »

Some of you may have seen this in Prof. Ed Vieira’s classes but for those who have not I think this is one of the funniest, creative ads I have ever seen.
The pomegranate phone. The ad takes you through all these special features that this “phone” has including a coffee maker and a harmonica, leaving the viewer wondering if this could possibly be real or if its just another scam. They didn’t necessarily convince me to go there but they got the name to stick in my mind at least so next time I am planning a vacation relatively close to home, maybe I’ll think ... more »

I’m doing something a little bit different this week. It’s getting toward the middle of the semester and if your anything like me, your dying for a vacation…just a little one to get away from essays and long lectures for a couple days. I’ve been checking out some websites that offer great last minute deals on flights and hotel packages, and I thought I would share them with you!
www.lastminute.com
Lastminute allows you to search from your departure city and then gives you a list of places of fairly cheap destinations. Most of the destinations are not places I would typically think about going but it may give you some ideas, or show you some place you didn’t know you wanted to go!
www.statravel.com
STA is dedicated to students, teachers and young professionals (under 26), they offer discounts on flights, hotel rooms and other travel needs. They also have a last minute deals page to inspire an impromptu trip!
