Another amazing travel internship...

Posted by Caitlin Smith

STA Travel will soon be excepting applications for World Traveler interns for 2010. The Interns will get to travel the world, paid for by STA, and then blog, post videos and pictures on the STA site. This is an amazing opportunity for the interns and great marketing strategy by STA. It got me to the site to check out how to become an intern and then got me to start thinking about where I want to go next and look up flights to Egypt.

It looks like this years interns are having an incredible time in their travels. Check it out!

Zuji Beans

Posted by Caitlin Smith

In this time of economic struggle, many people are passing on taking a vacation or going on holiday. Zuji Travel Australia is part of the Travelocity family, and in my opinion has MUCH better ads than its American sister. And has came up with a creative spin on "Help Holidays Happen". They made their own brand of baked beans and sold them for 10c a can, advertising that the money saved from buying more expensive beans should be saved for holiday. I think the campaign is really creative and extremely funny, seeing they really did sell the beans...

MadMen goes United

Posted by Caitlin Smith

This United Airlines ad, looks like it could have been created by Don Draper and the rest of the creative team at Sterling Cooper, (MadMen reference, for those of you who haven't seen the show.) I absolutely love it. It's from the 1960s when many men would go on business trips and leave their wives at home with the kids. The ad targets housewives who want to go and travel with their husbands and not be left in the suburbs. And some bloggers claim that the "Take Me Along" campaign was created from backlash from wives finding out the their husbands were taking their girlfriends along, instead of their wives. For whatever reason it was made I'm glad someone saved it and posted it to YouTube because this ad is great and really reflects that period in advertising well.

Travelocity Gnome

Posted by Caitlin Smith

So normally the ads, with the gnome REALLY bother me. I hate them. I don't like his voice, I think it's weird that he's always just placed in strange places and doing strange things. Anyway I just saw the new ad "Vacationing at home" and LOVED it. I was so surprised but I thought it was the funniest commercial they have done yet. I'm hoping that there is more like this to come because I am so sick of the older ads!

Need a Vacation?

Posted by Caitlin Smith

I’m doing something a little bit different this week. It’s getting toward the middle of the semester and if your anything like me, your dying for a vacation…just a little one to get away from essays and long lectures for a couple days. I’ve been checking out some websites that offer great last minute deals on flights and hotel packages, and I thought I would share them with you!

www.lastminute.com Lastminute allows you to search from your departure city and then gives you a list of places of fairly cheap destinations. Most of the destinations are not places I would typically think about going but it may give you some ideas, or show you some place you didn’t know you wanted to go!

www.statravel.com STA is dedicated to students, teachers and young professionals (under 26), they offer discounts on flights, hotel rooms and other travel needs. They also have a last minute deals page to inspire an impromptu trip!

The Pomegranate Phone

Posted by Caitlin Smith

Some of you may have seen this in Prof. Ed Vieira’s classes but for those who have not I think this is one of the funniest, creative ads I have ever seen.

The pomegranate phone. The ad takes you through all these special features that this “phone” has including a coffee maker and a harmonica, leaving the viewer wondering if this could possibly be real or if its just another scam. But if you what to the very end, it is revealed that the advertisement is actually not for a phone at all but for Nova Scotia.

It then goes on to tell you all the great things you can do in Nova Scotia and why you should go there. I think that this was very creative on their part. Nova Scotia is not typically a place that I would even think of when planning a trip but after seeing this ad Nova Scotia has stuck in my mind. They didn’t necessarily convince me to go there but they got the name to stick in my mind at least so next time I am planning a vacation relatively close to home, maybe I’ll think ... more »

The Best Job in the World

Posted by Caitlin Smith

Want to spend 6 months traveling on the northern coast of Australia? Want to do it for free?

Last year Tourism Queensland ran a contest to find an “Island Caretaker.” A new position created to promote the Islands that run along the Great Barrier Reef in northern Australia. The ad campaign called for people interested in the position to submit a 60 second video which was then voted on by the public via the Tourism Australia website. More than 34,000 people from across the globe submitted applications but only one could be chosen. Ben Southall was chosen as the winner and has since been traveling all over the beautiful coastline, experiencing a truly Aussie adventure, scuba diving at the reef, trying local cuisines and local flavors, and then blogging about it.

With the success of the first campaign in January 2009, in August they started a new campaign to be Ben’s helpers, again participants were asked to submit a video to compete to travel on a shorter 4-6 week trip with 3 mate ... more »

Travel Advertising

Posted by Caitlin Smith

Hi everyone! My name is Caitlin Smith and I'm going to be writing about advertisements for travel. Mostly for airlines, hotels and destinations.

I love advertising and love to look at ads and see if they are effective or not and why, especially in the current economic situation where many people are not traveling as much. So that’s what I’ll be doing throughout the semester. I hope you find it interesting!

Stay tuned for future updates!
