South End Buttery

Posted by Samantha Sweeney

Tuesday night, my roommate and I made a journey out of our quest to find the South End Buttery in Boston's historic South End.

We took the green line to Boylston, hopped off and got on the Silver Line to Union. From there, it was only about a ten minute walk to the cafe.

South End Buttery's website raved about their cupcakes (which were rated #1 in Boston) so our expectations were high.

The actual cafe itself was pretty interesting. The man behind the counter looked as though he could have popped right out from an Urban Outfitters catalog, and the rest of the patrons seemed artsy..

As for the cupcakes, they were pretty delicious. The cake was good, and the frosting was a whip cream concoction. It's pretty rare that you find a cupcake with whip cream frosting, but it wasn't bad. My roommate bought a red velvet one, and she loved it. The regular vanilla/vanilla or chocolate/chocolate (or vanilla/chocolate, chocolate/vanilla) and Red Velvet were $3. "Specialty" cupcakes go up to $3. ... more »

Sweet Cupcakes Don't Satisfy My Sweet Tooth

Posted by Samantha Sweeney

My step father's old band used to play in Harvard Square often, so whenever they come into the city, we like to go back and explore the cafes and concert halls that bring up so many fond memories for him. Walking around Camrbidge on a perfect fall afternoon, we ran into Sweet, a new cup cake shop.

The interior design of the shop was fairly simple and "old fashioned" with large glass windows in the front, and a pastel pink covering the walls. Couples sat together drinking milk and eating what looked like delicious little treats.

There wasn't a line, so we were served right away by two college aged girls. We both got one, and then half a dozen to bring back to my dorm as a quick remedy to those stressful college moments.

My mother and I both got vanilla on vanilla, and I must say, they were mediocre at best. The texture of t ... more »

Boston Bakeries and Cupcakes

Posted by Samantha Sweeney

Having spent many summers in Manhattan, and many weekend getaways in the city with my mother, I became a true aficionado of the perfect sized treat we know as The Cupcake. Cupcakes were, and still are huge in New York. But who started this madness? Many say it began on the hit TV series Sex in the City, which promoted Greenwich Village's Magnolia Bakery . In recent years, cupcake bakeries have sprouted up all over New York City and cities across the country. At weddings, the traditional tiered cake is often absent, leaving dozens of cupcakes in its place, and the same for birthday cakes.

Coming to a new city meant being able to discover it's hidden secrets, and the same can go for discovering its bakeries and cupcakes. I've tasted most of the cupcakes New York has to offer, and in this blog I'm excited to share with everyone the ones I try in Boston.
