Simmons Students Connecting Service and Learning

It is hard to believe it is already mid-semester and the service learning projects that were launched in September have only a few weeks left. There is some great work being done this semester and I thought I would share some of it with you.

Over 100 undergraduate students are engaged in service learning this semester in courses through the management, psychology, sociology, honors, education and social justice departments. For example, developmental psychology students are serving with Jumpstart preschool students and a social justice student is working with Teen Voices as an Editorial Mentor helping girls research and write articles for the magazine.

More than 50 graduate students are engaged in service learning projects ranging from promoting healthy lifestyles to incarcerated women, inner city children and the homeless; to tackling and creating a strategic communication plan for organizational change for partners such as America Scores, Community Healthworks, and the Peterborough Senior Center.

These students will volunteer, reflect and connect with their partner organizations. Our partners will support and dedicate time to assist the students in reaching mutually set goals. There will be different challenges for many of our students in completing their service learning but there will also be a variety of successes and learning outcomes and revelations.

Many of the students will be involved with final presentations or papers that will involve community partner feedback and participation. This is a time when the students can look back on their hard work and see how they have overcome challenges, assumptions and learned new skills - a time of accomplishment and pride for all involved.
