Archival Assistant, Tufts University/Northeastern University, Boston, MA

Professor Elizabeth Setren at the Tufts University Economics Department is looking to hire several full- or part-time archival assistants to work on a project that studies desegregation busing program that promotes racial integration in the Boston-area public schools. Archival assistants will digitize historical student applications and other documents to update a database that will be used for research. 


Pay: $20/hour

Time: 20-40 hours/week

Starting: January 2020


Primary Duties: 

  • Handle historical documents containing confidential information  

  • Update existing electronic databases using historical paper records

  • Catalog historical records


Required Qualifications:

  • Current student or recent graduate of an ALA-accredited graduate degree program in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies/Administration, Museum Studies or a related field.  

  • MA students/graduates in History, American Studies, and related fields may also be considered. 

  • Excellent attention to detail  

  • Good command of Microsoft Excel

  • Understand the importance of data quality and data security 

  • Able to work independently

  • Able to lift up to banker's box with archival records (25-30 lbs)


Ideal candidates will be able to devote 20-40 hours per week on this project during the Spring 2020 semester. The job is located at Northeastern Library Archives and Special Collections in Snell Library. The office is open Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5:00pm, so all work will need to be completed between their operating hours. A laptop is not required, but would be helpful. 


This is a project-based position and the length of employment will be determined by how long it takes to complete the project. We anticipate the project taking at least the first half of the spring 2020 semester, potentially longer.
