Director of Support Services

Tenderloin Housing Clinic (THC) is San Francisco's largest city-funded provider of permanent housing for single homeless adults, serving over 1,600 people annually across a growing portfolio of more than 17 single room occupancy hotels (SROs). Founded in 1980 as a legal and advocacy services provider for low-income tenants, THC has since evolved to include housing and support services, using Harm Reduction principles, in order to help clients maintain stability, retain housing, and improve their quality of life. THC has achieved remarkable results: 93% of clients in the organization's properties retain stable housing on an annual basis. Today THC operates with a budget of $27 million and more than 250 staff. Position Overview:

THC is seeking a Director of Support Services to lead the overall delivery of a robust and dynamic support services program. With new investments from the City, the Support Services staff will double in size within the next four years and explore new opportunities to provide more highly individualized case management and support services to THC's clients. Reporting to the Director of Programs and working in close collaboration with THC's executive team, the Director of Support Services will develop the structures that will continue to support the growing department and will be responsible for bringing best practices which will further build the capacity of the Support Services staff. Drawing on strong clinical training and experience, s/he will ensure that clients are engaged with the supports they need to achieve self-sufficiency and provided exceptional customer service. Responsibilities:

Program Expansion, Administration and Operations
• Direct the delivery of support services in THC's residential and Shelter Plus Care buildings, bringing best practices in program models and delivery, ensuring services provided are aligned with THC's mission, core values, customer service philosophy, and policies and procedures
• Develop uniform department policies, procedures, objectives and goals, and partner with the Director of Programs to develop a department business plan and budget corresponding to these goals and objectives
• Ensure the department meets goals and objectives related to client outcomes, safety, quality, and financial stability 
• Collaborate with the Property Management and Housing Services Departments, communicating regularly in order to ensure consistent and comprehensive services to tenants 
• Maintain effective working relationships with contracted property management companies that operate THC's Shelter Plus Care properties
• Review and approve all non-payment and nuisance eviction cases, following THC's non-payment and nuisance eviction prevention policies
• Participate in the development and maintenance of THC's tenant information files and databases
• Ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, and regulations; prepare reports for organizational leaders, funders, and regulatory agencies as assigned
• Review, approve, and/or seek approval of expenditures
• Evaluate and/or negotiate contracts as assigned

Staff Supervision 

• Participate in the hiring of Support Services staff; manage the Support Services staff, providing ongoing support, training, and performance management, and holding each individual accountable for high levels of teamwork and customer service 
• Plan and lead department and team meetings, supervisions, and trainings to motivate staff, promote teambuilding, provide professional development, and foster effective working relationships

Collaborative Leadership

• Actively participate on THC's executive leadership team in order to drive agency-wide policy and strategic direction decisions and provide guidance to the department in aligning its work with agency-wide goals and objectives
• Facilitate agency-wide staff development activities, such as trainings on case management, mental health, harm reduction, and communication
• Work closely with the UCSF Behavioral Health Roving Team to ensure ongoing best practices in case management provided to tenants with acute needs
• Coordinate with other local non-profits to form mutually beneficial relationships, expanding services and opportunities for tenants

Requirements/Qualifications

• 7+ years of demonstrated success building and leading the development function in an entrepreneurial, high-performing nonprofit organization.
• Demonstrated track record of securing six-digit gifts from corporations, foundations, individual donors, and/or public sources in the education space. 
• Excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills with both internal and external stakeholders. 
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to write effectively and speak persuasively; strong ability to tell a compelling story. 
• Superior organizational skills with a strong sense of detail-orientation.
• Capability to think strategically while executing tactically within a lean environment.
• Experience with Salesforce or equivalent CRM system.
• Understanding of the education landscape, and a genuine interest in the mission, vision and strategic direction of Breakthrough Collaborative. 
• Ability to infuse healthy doses of humor and humility in one's work. 
• Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
