Program Coordinator (Elder Services)

Under the direction of the Director of Elder Services, the program coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating diversified programs, activities and special events for older adults using the Senior Center, other Town of Andover facilities, and private facilities and following established methods and procedures.

Develop, coordinate and implement a wide variety of daily Senior Center programs and activities. Develop monthly calendar of diverse recreational, social, cultural, educational, and multi-/intergenerational activities.

Arrange for program instructors and guest speakers, and coordinate a variety of other special events programs for mature adults and caregivers.

Coordinate acquisition of resources and materials necessary to implement programs.

Manage and balance program budget, including purchase of program materials, payment of vendors, and collection and reconciliation of program and registration fees.

Effectively manage programs and programming space.

Create and develop innovative community outreach strategies.

Develop promotional literature for programs and prepare news and press releases (weekly, and for special events). Prepare articles and coordinate information and distribution of the monthly newsletter. Prepare flyers and posters for program offerings and special events.

Manage Center at Punchard media: webpage, social media, info line, television, automated phone calls.

Encourage formal and informal activity of seniors at the Center at Punchard.

Cooperate with school administrators and others to foster intergenerational activity.

Manage diverse groups and committees related to programs such as hiking, writing, culture, education, computer literacy, advocacy, women's and men's groups.

Work with a wide variety of stakeholders to develop programming for interest groups, including Boomers, caregivers, and intergenerational groups.

Recruit, supervise, and train program volunteers.


Must be attentive to the needs of older adults visiting the center. Listen to their concerns and help resolve issues related to programming.

Refer consumers to other departments and services. 

Give welcome tours to new participants 

Perform other duties as required. 


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Working knowledge of programs and activities for Center at Punchard consumers. 

Ability to oversee a variety of group programs and initiate innovative programs.

Effective oral and written communication and marketing of programs and ideas. Public speaking and presentations to community groups; publicity and recruitment for programming and volunteer opportunities at the Center at Punchard. 

Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people, supervise and motivate paid and volunteer staff, and maintain positive relationships with other Town of Andover Departments and Divisions. 

Ability to interact positively and work effectively with consumers and other participants.

 Strong organizational skills.

Computer literacy, including the ability to use Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and learn department-specific software.

Creativity and flexibility.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Gerontology, or a related field.

Experience in development and administration of programming for mature adults and people with disabilities.

An equivalent combination of education and experience.


Supervises volunteers, interns, and tax voucher staff and instructors.


Exposure to normal office and recreational environment; may be subject to noise and frequent interruptions.

May involve attendance at evening and weekend meetings or events, or travel to meetings in other communities.

May involve a standard work week schedule that includes some evenings and Saturdays.
