Part-time Middle School Counselor

Cambridge Friends School is seeking a part-time (8 hours per week, 20% position) Middle School Counselor for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Description:

The Middle School Counselor serves students and collaborates with faculty. The Middle School Counselor works collaboratively with the Middle School Head and faculty and works to ensure that the educational goals of the school are implemented for the education of the whole child focusing on the social and emotional life of Middle School students. The MS Counselor serves a key role in creating an atmosphere of emotional wellness among students. The Counselor reports directly to the Middle School Head.

Job Responsibilities:
• Provide regular individual counseling support sessions with Middle School students, as needed
• Coordinate with the Lower School Counselor to facilitate student peer support groups on diverse family structures, divorce, grief and loss, when necessary
• Support Middle School faculty in their roles as advisors and teachers
• Participate in Middle School Student Support Team (SST) meetings
• Meet regularly with the Middle School Learning Specialist and Middle School Head to discuss issues concerning Middle School students and to review case studies, the status of students receiving tutoring, referrals for psycho-educational screenings and evaluations, etc.
• Conduct assessments of Middle School students and observe them in classrooms
• Meet with teachers regarding issues concerning students
• Meet with parents and participate in parent conferences
• Maintain a current and accurate referral database of mental health service providers; connect parents with outside therapeutic referrals as needed; and coordinate with outside providers working with students
• Maintain accurate clinical notes regarding all students
• Provide crisis management support
• Provide parental support and guidance related to child development as needed

Qualifications
• Strong clinical skills with 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and parents
• Familiarity with a wide range of learning styles
• LD experience and knowledge of IEPs a plus
• Commitment to the creation and sustainability of an inclusive, anti-racist, anti-homophobic, equitable learning environment for all students
• Masters, Ph.D., or Psy.D. in social work or clinical mental health counseling
