Friends of Pangea Day

Open to everyone in public

Saturday, May 10, 2008
2:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: Linda K. Paresky Conference Center

Pangea Day taps the power of film to strengthen tolerance and compassion while uniting millions of people to build a better future.

In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.

On May 10, 2008 – Pangea Day – sites in Cairo, Dharamsala, Kigali, London, New York City, Ramallah, Rio de Janeiro, and Tel Aviv will be videoconferenced live to produce a 4-hour program of powerful films, visionary speakers, and uplifting music.

Sponsored by the Technology Department, the Technology Diversity Team is hosting Pangea Day here on campus, making Simmons a part of this historic day!  Please keep your eyes open for more details regarding this event.

Robbin Chapman: Making the Unconscious Conscious

For: Technology Staff Only
Technology Staff Only Event

Date: March 4, 2008
Time: 12:30 - 2:00pm
Location: Special Functions Room
Speaker: Robbin Chapman, Ph.D.

When assumptions and stereotypes influence our attitudes, we may find making a fair judgment about someone or something difficult. What we believe to be objective action may be reinforced by unconscious bias. In this session, we will unpack the causes of unconscious bias and learn to recognize it, check for it, and with practice, minimize its influence on our decisions. Be prepared for a hands-on thinking and learning experience.

Dr. Robbin Chapman is a diversity consultant based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Chapman has worked on diversity-related issues since 1996, and leads diversity recruitment, retention, and strategic change management for the MIT School of Architecture and Planning.

As a diversity consultant, Dr. Chapman works with organizations to increase awareness of the importance of diversity by addressing issues of bias, cultural competency, and inclusion. She specializes in leading diversity awareness, cross-cultural communication, and cross-cultural conflict resolution workshops.

Dr. Chapman received her Ph.D. and S.M. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She has been a recipient of a CILT grant to investigate equity issues as they relate to the use of technology in education. She currently servers as MIT Regional Liaison for the Ford Diversity Fellowship program, sponsored by the National Academies of Science.

Please look for your Meeting Maker invitation from one of our team members. A simple reply of "yes" will confirm your RSVP for the Lunch & Learn, but remember to do so BEFORE March 2, 2008.
