Learn something new .....

Posted by Karen Teeley

Okay, so this is going out on a limb... but I have fallen out of trees before so why not this one?

I recently attended the Colleges of the Fenway Fall Teaching and Learning conference and was struck (again) by how little time faculty have for sharing ideas about their own teaching and learning practices....and other good sources of information. So I thought that this might be a good forum just for sharing ideas and resources. As everyone knows, there are not enough hours in the day to find all the good stuff on our own.

I came away with a couple of new (to me) interesting websites. One was the Pew Report from the Pew Internet and American Life project at http://www.pewinternet.org/report_display.asp?r=162 This report talks about the rise of a "participatory" culture (MySpace, IM etc)and how teens create content that matters and the pedagogical implications.

The other interesting thing I learned about was the product Elluminate 's Vroom at http://www.elluminate.com/vroom/. I haven't t ... more »

Portfolios

Posted by Jensen Pulling

The awesome thing about the internet is the ability to get your work out there. If you are an artist, there is now the option of having a digital portfolio! It's a great way, (and cheap, too!), to mass market yourself. You can even go global! It's a great way to put you ahead of the group in the job markets too. It shows you have a lot of digital experience, (even if you don't...).

Here's how:

Step 1: Start a blog! Put yourself out there. Throw ideas around, shout out what you feel! You'd be surprised how many people are interested in what you have to say.

Step 2: Get a Flickr account. I know there are many other programs, but Flickr is the best, (trust me).

Step 3: Take HIGH-QUALITY digital pictures of all your work, (it's pretty easy if you work with digital pictures in the first place!) and set yourself up! Upload them everywhere you can think of. It's pretty cheap now-a-days to get your own website for a year, if you're tech-savvy enough to make it look professional.

Step 4: Get ... more »

Date

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: This is a photograph I took for a project I did this year in my documentary class. The picture is of me dressed up and preparing for a date. In the photograph you can see my laptop, a bottle of liquor, my body, dress, heels, desk and the general atmosphere of my room.

Analysis: There is an indication of gender and the role that gender plays in preparation of a date. I am obviously dressed in heels and a short dress and from my attire you can only assume that my face and hair are made up. It can lead you to imagine what my date will look like or act like. Will my date be a male? Wear pants? Who will pay for our date?

Interpretation: I took this photograph in a series called 100years. This series asks the question, if I were to give my ancestors 100 years from now 10 pictures, what would they say? I took this picture to show my ancestor a little bit about my life. In this picture I was hoping to subtly show that I had a boyfriend by photographing my preparation for our da ... more »

Untitled

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: The first picture is of a tape measure coming out of a vending machine. The second picture is of refrigerator door with measuring tape between the two sections.

Analysis: I did a project on weight consciousness. I placed a tape measure in places where many women start to think about their weight or places where women make decisions about what to eat based on weight.

Interpretation: I wanted people to start to think about body image and how that affects our lives and the decisions we make.

A Beautiful Place

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: I took this picture at Nonesuch Pond, which is on my old high school's campus. It is a picture of the trees and plants and water that are on the shore of the pond.

Analysis: I love this photograph because all the corners of the picture have something interesting to look at. The tree frames the left side of the picture and draws your eye right into the center and bottom right corner of the photograph.

Interpretation: To me there is not a deep meaning to this photograph. I wanted to take a pretty picture of a pretty place. :)

Boston Marathon

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: I took this picture last year around Boylston Street during the Boston Marathon. I was on my way to work on Newbury Street and I was having difficulty actually getting to work because the roads were blocked off for the marathon. So I decided to take some photographs. I usually do not take pictures like these, it isn't my style of photography but for some reason I was drawn in. So I stood behind the barriers and took pictures of the handicap bike riders and the onlookers of the Boston Marathon.

Analysis: I love the composition of the photograph with the onlookers still and in focus and the driver blurry and in motion. It definitely creates a relationship between the two. I like the expression of determination on the rider’s face and the American flag blowing in the speed, it evokes a sense of patriotism.

Interpretation: I enjoy this photograph because I love the determination of the rider and the support that the onlookers are giving him. I believe the rider has a missin ... more »

The Necklace

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: This is a photograph by Alexandra Sanguinetti from the series, Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of their Dreams. In this series Sanguinetti photographs the same two girls during their childhood through to their young adulthood. I believe she took all the pictures in Argentina. I went to one of her lectures at BU last year and I absolutely fell in love with her photographs. Read more about her and her work and see more of her photographs. http://alessandrasanguinetti.com/

Analysis: The picture above entitled The Necklace is my favorite picture of all time. I have the poster version of it in my room. Yes, I love this picture for its aesthetic qualities. The colors are beautiful. The reds, the golds the medium blacks but I love this picture because of the relationship between the two girls.

Interpretation: In this picture I see an overweight girl with her hair pinned up, wearing a not so glamorous mu-mu like dress, touching and examining the jewels ... more »

One with Nature

Posted by Seree Fofana

Description: Since I showed my favorite photograph of all time. I have decided to show you my favorite photographer of all time, Arno Rafael Minkkinen. He makes cool pictures in nature. See and read more about him and his work.

http://www.arnorafaelminkkinen.org/welcome.html

Analysis: Minkkinen describes himself as documentary photographer and says that everything in his photography is factual. "If his hand is under water then his hand is under water." I love his style. I love how he puts himself into nature so it seems as though he is a part of it. His first top picture that I have shown actually inspired me to do this picture as a part of my weight consciousness project.....

Interpretation: His pictures look so cool! The tones, composition, distortions, different range of vantage points make all of his photographs unique. I love how his body becomes one with nature. His photographs are beautiful :)
