Apple has started to ship "Leopard Only" hardware.
This was expected behavior for Apple. The Generic OS installation DVD media that Simmons receives as part of its Maintenance Agreement with Apple *should* be installable on this new hardware. This has been noted for future testing.

MacBook (Late 2007): About the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation disk
The Mac OS X 10.5 installation disk that shipped with your MacBook (13-inch Late 2007) is designed for use on this computer only and not intended for any other computer.
The installer prevents this software from being installed on other Macintosh computers and other Mac OS X 10.5 installation disks will not work on the MacBook (13-inch Late 2007).

**eLearning - Safari Browser Initial Testing**
Check Browser Results:
Browser Check:
Failed - non-validated or unsupported, Safari version unknown
(This was expected as Safari 3.0.4 (Released with Leopard) is not a certified browser)
Cookies Check:
Passed
Javascript Check:
Passed
Pop-up Window Check:
Failed - Pop-up Windows are not enabled
Safari 3.0.4 has pop-up windows blocked by default. This is a change. Blocking pop-ups has been an "all or notheing" option is Safari, but it has not been the default setting.
To change this:
Go to File Menu --> Safari -->)You will see that "Block Pop-up Windows" has a check mark by it.) Just click on "Block Pop-up Windows" to diable Pop-up blocking. The Pop-Up Windows check will then pass.
Java Check: (**MY ALL TIME FAVORITE**)
PASSES. Version 1.5.0_13
In terms of eLearning this is an excellent thing. I did test the Java 6 beta that came out earlier this year, it passed the check but key features in eLearning (HTML Editor and Chat) were not functional. Some other features proved to be rather flakey and unstable. So I was really happy when Leopard was released with a flavour of 1.5
Otherwise I was going to have to take a page out of Trish's book and start channelling Peanut.
Help Desk Test Protocol:
Logged in to Help Desk test account. Annoying Browser check windows popped up again.
Browser Certificate Pops up twice. This is normal. Click OK and id goes away. To date I have not discovered a way to make this certificate dialog go away permanently. This pops up every time you log into eLearning. Even if the certificate is instructed to "always trust".
I did notice a difference in Leopard, in the "Trust" section of the certificate dialog there is a change:
Trust
When using this certificate: "Use System Defaults"
X.509 Basic Policy: "no value specified"
In Tiger both values were set to default as "Use System Defaults"
Not sure why this change or what its impact will or will not be at this point.
But is is noted for future testing.
For the time being I have changed both to "Always Trust" as I have been doing with Tiger.
TEST MEDIA COLLECTION
Apple QuickTime .mov test: Passes.
The graphics look different. On a Tiger (10.4) Mac The background is white qnd looks better. In Leopard (10.5) The background in black. This makes the graphics look smaller. At first I thought hte proportional sizing of the graphics was different, but it just appears that way because of the darker background.
MPEG Layer 3 Audio .mp3 test: Passes
Background is also black. Sound quality is good.
MPEG test: Passed.
QuickTime autoplay default is off. This is changed to enabled in the System Preferences QuickTime pane on Simmons Mac based images.
PDF Test: There are 3 options for viewing .pdf documents.
1. Download and open in Preview
2. Open in a Window using Apples inherent pdf viewer. Looks good, is readable, scrollable and has quite a few options if you right click (control-click) on the document. Some new, some old.
3. Open in a Window using Adobe Readers pdf viewer plug-in version 8.1.0 (latest as of 10/29/07).
Works but has a black background, same top and left side menu options.
Scrolling on a two-page document is unstable. Really bad, all that moves is a line or two here and there. Unless you happen to click on the bottom scrow arrow (The scroll bar is not visible) then the document will properly scroll.
My pick:
Option number 2. Stable, readable. Right-click (control-click) ability is not evident, will need to document/educate for this feature. Adobe's pdf plug-in has been preferred in the past because of the visible menu options, but instability in scrolling a mere two-page document rules it out as an option for now.
PowerPoint .ppt test:
PowerPoint has not opened automatically in eLearning on the Mac. It auto-downloads to the desktop. User must double-click on the .ppt file on the desktop or right-click on the ppt icon in the download Windows dialog.
Behavior under Leopard/Safari 3.0 doesn't appear to have changed...
Bit of a surprise when I right-clicked the file icon in the download Window dialog box. iWorks Keynote 08 opens. Not nice to take away my default open choice Apple. This should not effect current or proposed Mac images, as long as iWorks is not loaded.
The work around for this is to go to the downloaded .ppt file on the Desktop, right click and choose "Open With" and then choose "Microsoft PowerPoint".
Interesting: I closed the file, and opened-with Powerpoint. After that the file opened in Powerpoint by default. iWorks Presentations had not been opened yet, but Powerpoint had. This has been filed away for future testing and reference.
Shockwave Test: Passed
Works as well as it did in Tiger, background is black. Instead of a completely white background behind the image, there is a 1/2 inch band of black around the white box that the graphic is on. Visually I like the all white background better.
WAV test: Passes
The .wma file shows up as an Unknown Binary as it did in Tiger, but opens in QuickTime and plays properly.
CHAT and Whiteboard Test:
Inital basic testing works. Whiteboard appears to be more stable than it has in the past. I do not see the flickering that I used to in Tiger. Different fonts, font sizes, pencils, erasure, Clear Area works.
DISCUSSIONS:
Loads, appears to be stable, momentary white outs while scrolling still
exist like I used to see in previous versions of O/S and Java.
HTML Editor passes:
Java loads (still a bits slow, but faster than it used to load) Minimal testing passes.
-Tried different fonts, font styles and types.
-Document Statistics functional
-Spellcheck works
-Minimizing and maximizing menu bars works
-Insert Equation/Equation Editor works
-Uploading and downloading different file types and sizes work.
I did not test files larger than 3.5 MB
So, except for the Browser check I am happy with the eLearning testing.
WebDav and more extensive testing from the "building" and Professor-Student point of view is needed.
Web Dav:
Connects to UMass eLearning server but TAKES FOREVER to transfer files. It takes a long time (over 60 seconds) to be able to view the files in the directory. I takes much longer to copy, move, delete and/or add files. A 6kb file takes over 67 seconds to upload or download files.

This is one of the many reasons why I am not a fan of "upgrading' from one version of an Operating System to another. Successive upgrades can and do run into issues like this. Some are easily fixable some are not.
Mac OS X 10.5: Unable to log in to account after an upgrade install
Issue or symptom
You may not be able to log in with a user account that has a password of 8 or more characters and was originally created in Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier, after performing an upgrade installation of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (the default installation type).
This will effect "local" accounts only, not network authenticated accounted.
