Veganism

Recently, I came to the conclusion that people who partake in 'veganism' (I think that's a word), are not at all crazy or slightly out there for doing it. It's a decision, just like any, and it doesn't make a person any different. However, there's many, many people who do, and I'm not quite sure why they see it that way. It probably has a lot to do with people's fear of the unknown and different. Veganism isn't entirely a rash decision, there's plenty of alternates to 'normal' food. There's rice cheese, soy milk, bread not made with animal products, and many name brand foods that are 'accidentally' vegan. (http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/) I don't see what's so gross about tofu, rice cheese or any of the other alternates. I would say that 100% of the alternates that I've tried so far (soy milk, rice milk, vegan American & Monteray Jack cheese, soy yogurt, vegan butter) taste just as good as the 'normal' version, and in some cases even better. Not to mention, a lot of the alternates are healthier for you!
Last night I had some of the best home made quesadillas, and guess what? They were vegan. The only difference in the 'vegan' version of my dinner was the vegan cheese and tofu. The rest of the ingredients were 'normal,' so to speak. Vegan cheese is not that bad either. Personally, I prefer the vegan sliced American rice cheese to that of regular sliced American. Right now, I'm going to test out 'veganism' and see if it really is so crazy and insane. At the moment, it's pretty easy. The only food I'm really missing so far, is ice cream and ravioli. I haven't found a vegan recipe for ravioli but I have found one for chocolate gelato and some other ice creams.
That's part of the reason for my recent change in lifestyle. Honestly, I wasn't eating any animal products aside from dairy/chicken & eggs as it was, so it hasn't been that hard to switch over and it is healthier for me to switch over. There's a lot of support online and websites that have been really helpful. Grocery shopping has been a bit more time costly but that's only because I've never shopped for some of these foods before and have no clue where or if they are in certain grocery stores. That and I live in a pretty un-cultural area with hardly any natural food stores close by. I'm pretty pumped to come back to Boston as I've already found vegan pizza places, vegan thai restaurants among many other really interesting sounding restaurants.

chipotle mexican grill

This Wednesday 1/30/2008, the soon-to-open Chipotle Mexican Grill on Beacon Street in Cleveland Circle will be serving free burritos and drinks between 11am and 8pm. If you like mexican food and want to save money, this is the perfect night for you! I also heard the burritos are pretty big...The grill is right near Boloco and the thai restauraut with the yellow sign.

Recommendations

Last Saturday I went with my father to the North End and we ate at this great restaurant called Carmen’s. It was located off Hanover Street. The ambiance was excellent and the menu was as well. I recommend the flat bread and the risotto. This is kind of a pricey restaurant but it is ideal if you want to splurge.
