Thinking Outrageously I Write in Cursive...

Posted by Iman Richards

Buon Giorno!

I hope everyone had a quick lax week. I don't know about you, but the whole wednesday off thing really worked for me.

Anyway.

As I was engaged in italian this morning, sucking up everything my professor said like a sponge (ha), I could not get this one song out of my head. I don't know why...I actually haven't listened to this album in quite some time. But the entire cd is absolutely fantastic and this song is pure poetry. Seriously.

It's called The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is out to Get Us by Sufjan Stevens. No joke, that is the title. This little genius likes to come up with super complicated complex titles for most of his songs. It's great in my opinion.

Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRW2g2l49fk

This one is off probably his most popular cd, Illinois...most likely because the song Chicago is featured, which was a major theme in the movie Little Miss Sunshine. That's when I first discovered him anyway.

Give it a listen and check out his other st ... more »

Rihanna and "Russian Roulette"

Posted by Ashley Morris

Photobucket

Amidst all the controversy surrounding the 2009 incident with Chris Brown, Rihanna has dropped her latest single,"Russian Roulette" off her new album, “Rated R”. Based on the album cover alone, Rihanna makes it clear her new single and image will address some raw subject matter. I wanted to look at the latest single to see what kind of lyrics she and co-writer Neyo had in store for fans.

First off, the song is about a deadly game/relationship(certainly sounds like life imitating art) with a gun and a man who, “says close your eyes.” The song describes anxiety, fear, and the “scary thought/that he’s (the man) here means he’s never lost “(has never lost the deadly game).”

And by the chorus lines that conclude the song, listeners get, “ As my life flashes before my eyes/I’m wondering will I ever see another sunrise/So many won’t get the chance to say goodbye/But it’s too late to pick up the value of my life.” This could be interpreted as the singer/narrator of ... more »

Silent rave in Toronto

I used to really like standing in front of the giant speakers at raves, but this is probably better for the surrounding neighborhoods and your ear drums.

For those who just want a break...

Posted by Iman Richards

Hi everyone.

Mondays are the worst. My 9 a.m. did everything it could to start my day off the wrong way. I can only hope things will get better as the hours pass.

So I thought it would be appropriate if the song of the day was Gimme Sympathy, by Metric. Because honestly, that's all I'm looking for.

Also, it's a fabulous song off their new album Fantasies, that I am PRAYING they will debut at their show friday night. (House of Blues $20). Sure to be a good time.

Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqldwoDXHKg

I hope you enjoy, and are having a better day than I am.

Until next time.

Rehearsals are every Monday night, from 7 to 9:30 PM, at White Hall, MCPHS. Just enter on the Palace Road entrance and ask where White Hall is. See you there!

CAUTION: MUST LOVE INDIE

Posted by Iman Richards

Hello out there!

I'm so glad Friday returns to us week after week. Have you ever thought about how awful it would be if it decided to never come back?

Ha.

Anyway, I was looking through my library, and came across a band I used to ADORE sophomore year in high school. They're like super indie, so if you don't have an open mind you may not dig.

The song of the day is Branches, by Midlake. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU6q2fofZRo

These guys are from Denton, Texas. Yeehawwww.

I don't really know what to tell you about this tune. It was my favorite of theirs back when I listened to them all the time. It's kindof sweet. It's kindof sad. Hope you like it.

Until next time.

Emerging Artists

Posted by Bevin Vigneau

Everyone loves music. No matter what situation we find ourselves in, there is always a song that fits us perfectly. Unfortunately, not all music is "radio-friendly" so some of the best artists and songs are never heard. This is where I come in. I dedicate this blog to the talented artists who are not as well known as popular stars such as Beyonce, Britney Spears, Kanye West, and so on. Each blog I will highlight two artists who I recommend, and a song or two that you should check out. You might even find a new favorite singer or band to add to your collection.

My first two artists are Keri Noble and Tyler Hilton.

Keri Noble is a singer/songwriter from Detroit. She has been compared to Norah Jones and Sarah McLachlan. Her lyrics are personal, and explore everyday issues that happen to real people. Listen to "Piece of My Heart" and " Watch Me Walk".

Billy Joel-isms -- All For Leyna

Posted by Stephanie Paquette

"If cool was a color, it'd be black-- and Billy Joel would be burnt orange...Yet Billy Joel is great." -Chuck Klosterman in Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs

When deciding what immortal Billy Joelism to share with you all, I figured I should take a step back and reread my favorite chapter in Klosterman's book entitled, "Every Drunk Must Have His Drink". For those of you not in the "Billy" know, Klosterman is not only playing on the lyrics in one of his popular songs, "Don't Ask Me Why" (from the very same album as "All For Leyna"), but also to his battle with alcohol. How clever, Chuck.

In particular, Klosterman chooses to highlight the album Glass Houses, released in 1980. If someone were to forcibly make me choose my favorite album, this would surely be a contender and “All For Leyna” is a large part of that reasoning.

“All For Leyna” tells the story of a man who after one encounter with Leyna is mesmerized and can’t sustain any other parts of his life. We’ve all been there. It ... more »

Billy Joel-isms -- Captain Jack

Posted by Stephanie Paquette

"The miracle of modern chemistry killed them if Vietnam didn't." -Billy Joel

The above quote is a comment Billy Joel made in the liner notes of the lyrics to Captain Jack. The quote directly references the traumatic affects of drug culture and the Vietnam War on the men of his time.

Captain Jack is one of Billy Joel's earlier songs, released in 1973 on the Piano Man album. The song depicts a young man of 21 and his searching for solace in drugs, masturbation and basically living a grimy life, despite being from the typical family. Billy was inspired to write the song after looking out the window and watching teenagers buy heroin from the local drug dealer in Oyster Bay-- no one else, but Captain Jack.

The song has been criticized as glorifying drugs, which is absolutely absurd. The message is powerful and still applicable today, minus the tie dye jeans (Although tie dye is making a comeback!). The song relays the universality of young adults delving into drugs and sex to alleviate teen ... more »

Billy Joel-isms -- Uptown Girl

Posted by Stephanie Paquette

Oftentimes when I talk to males about my obsession with Billy, they mention the sheer inspiration he shares. It's not his piano skills, his lyrics or his melodious voice...it's the fact that he gave hope to mediocre men everywhere.

That's right, the rise and fall of Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel isn't just celebrity gossip, but is also found in his music. I'm sure there are countless songs that were inspired by the nine-year romance, but there are two songs that directly reference her. Those songs are Christie Lee and Uptown Girl.

Uptown Girl, it's an ok song, but it's pretty catchy. Karaoke enthusiasts and piano bar aficionados alike belt out the tune. Personally, not my favorite...but the music video is so 80's inspired that you can't help but crack a smile. From Brinkley's classic uptown girl turned supermodel look and Billy Joel dressed as a mechanic from a bad part of town, you can't help but sing "Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh ... more »

Billy Joelisms- Billy Sides with Biggie

Posted by Stephanie Paquette

"So many faces in and out of my life Some will last Some will just be now and then Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes I'm afraid it's time for goodbye again Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby"

Say Goodbye to Hollywood and New York State of Mind are two famous Billy Joel songs, although New York State of Mind has certainly become an anthem of sorts for all New Yorkers, especially those who are not in New York.

Not sure how much detail I've gone into previously, but in the 70's Billy was forced into exile. Yes. Exile. His deal with an east coast record company had gone haywire, so he relocated to the west coast. He played in piano bars under the name "Bill Martin", and during this short time he did a lot of thinking... basically about how fake the West Coast is. Take that, Tupac.

Aside from these two, there's another song called Oyster Bay from the somewhat new released four disc box set "My Lives". Oyster Bay is about wanti ... more »

Hip hop...the good,the bad,the ugly

Posted by Ashley Morris

Hi,I'm Ashley! I'm at junior here at Simmons and I can easily say one of my favorite hobbies is music-listening to new songs, going to concerts, and comparing old and new musicians. My blog will be focusing on lyrics in popular rap and hip hop songs. Hip Hop is a genre always climbing to the top of the charts, constantly reinventing itself.

I want to find out what we get out of our music. What messages come out of the songs we listen to on our ipods, radios, MTV? So if you like hip hop stay tuned...

A look into the world of music supervision

Posted by Shannon Brown

Hey all!

So, one of my hundreds of dream jobs is to become a music supervisor, otherwise know as the person who picks the songs to be used in movies. I first discovered that the profession existed while reading an old Rolling Stone on a train from Munich to Amsterdam at the end of 2007. The article featured an interview from Alexandra Patsavas, probobly the most famous music supervisor out there. She is the reason all the cool kids in your high school started listening to good music. She did the music for the O.C. and now does it for Gossip Girl and Grey’s. Feel free to check her out. http://chopshopmusic.com/

The article caught my attention because it mentioned Will Dailey, the brother of one of my best friend’s from Simmons. www.willdailey.com He is signed to CBS records, a label the network created in order to have great music on its shows. Even if you haven’t heard of Will, chances are, if you watch TV, you’ve heard his music.

Basically, what I would love to do as a music s ... more »

Hip Hop...The Good.

Posted by Ashley Morris

So I figured I’d dive into some lyrics from the new Jay-Z Blueprint 3 album. His album is at the top of the charts and he recently performed this one at the MTV music awards on September 13th.

I’m talking about the Empire State of Mind song with Alicia Keys. If you saw his MTV performance of the song, that should’ve clued you in on how important the lyrics were to that night. With a New York background of the 9/11 memorial beam image representing the twin towers, I started to feel how powerful the song was.

Jay-Z gives you a taste of the New York nightlife with lyrics of, “welcome to the melting pot, corners where we selling rocks…yellow cap, gypsy hat, dollar cab, holla back…”. His ego does seem to take over the introduction when he reminds us of his white lexus and what he believes to be his Sinatra-type status.

But what really struck me was the chorus lyrics where Alicia Keys beautifully sings, “ Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, There’s nothing you can’t ... more »

Paramore - Brand New Eyes

Posted by Emily Mills

Now, I am not a fan of Paramore, but judging by the amount of Tshirts i see around campus almost daily, I know that Simmons College as a whole has a lot of fans. The new album, Brand New Eyes, which came out on Tuesday, is available on Amazon.com Mp3 for only $3.99!

I honestly don't understand the Idol worship of Hayley Williams, and I find her voice pretty whiney. But, I'm a fan of cheap/free music, and my boyfriend likes them, so I downloaded it anyways. I'll write a review of it sometime this week. Maybe I'll be surprised! I heard one newer song that is not on the album, "Hello, Hello", and was not impressed at all. Bland, and it is yet another song about hating someone who left you.

In other news, I finally bought the new Langhorne Slim album and it is everything I had hoped it would be! I will update with an album review of "Be Set Free" as well. I also splurged and bought the new album from Monsters of Folk, which is also worth a listen.

Langhorne Slim - Be Set Free

Posted by Emily Mills

"Be Set Free" starts off with a bang with the open track "Back to the Wild". The album continues to gain momentum as the tracks continue, with the peppy and quirky "Cinderella", the joyous "Say Yes", and my favorite track on the album "So Glad I'm Coming Home". There are so slower songs at well, but the album evens out to be a little bit funky, and very catchy. I would give this album 4.5 out of 5 stars, 5 being the best, 1 being the worst.

This album has a different feel to it than some of his other albums, such as his self titled album "Langhorne Slim". After hearing this album, I really wish I was seeing him when he plays at T.T. The Bears soon! I recommend buying this album. Here's a link to the Amazon.com Mp3 website :)

Hip Hop...The Bad.

Posted by Ashley Morris

So this portion of my blog will be devoted to what I feel is the worst in Hip hop/rap lyrics right now. If you feel there are songs more tasteless then what I'm finding please let me know!!

I thought I would start the bad off with the "You're A Jerk Song" by the New Boys. Ugh, I'm not going to lie I hate this song. The lyrics are so repetitive and annoying with the, " You're A Jerk, I know" making up most of the song's lyrical content.

Not to mention the total belittling of the female voice that's supposed to be the nagging hook of the song. " She was still half dressed" and " talkin' some little stuff while she textn"- that to me deserves a big LAME. There's a real lack of substance but what worries me is this 'song' is attracting the younger generation. Sure the 90s kids grew up with Eminem, but he sounded like he was supposed to be for the older kids. New Boys dress like their five and sound like they are as well.

Maybe I'm missing something, if you disagree please fill me in bec ... more »

This where the line between music as a digital art is blurry. I hate to say that this is just a digitally manufactured masterpiece, but it is. There is no machine out there that does this. Even though that would be awesome.

What are your thoughts on music as art? Is the only thing that makes this art the fact that it's digitally created?

Hip Hop...The Honors

Posted by Ashley Morris

So I’ve been trying to find the latest rap beef lyrics for my ‘Ugly’ segment of hip hop. There’s been some tension between G-Unit and Rick Ross, but no lyrics worthy enough for me to really break down. I’d much rather discuss the awesomeness that was VH1’s Hip hop Honors 25th Anniversary Celebration of Def Jam. First off, I love Def Jam-Method Man, Redman, LL Cool- the whole nine yards. But what a lineup the show had, some of the greatest MCs of the past and present, Public Enemy and Eminem- now I had to write something on the show.

Hip Hop Honors is more about celebrating the classics, the best lyrics in Hip Hop to date. Not necessarily underground, but some serious lyrical genius. I just couldn’t decide what song to focus on since I wasn’t going for the current stuff, so I went for the performance that gave the most hype….

I’m going to say DMX’s performance of “Party Up in Here” wins. Simply because his energy has always been crazy, and he’s been out of t ... more »

Ever listen to any Dr. Dog?

Posted by Iman Richards

Good morning everyone.

Today is October 16th. It is gray and rainy with a high of 38 degrees. There are roomers that snow fell in the city last night. The weather is certainly taking away from the exciting fact that it is indeed friday.

How about a tune to match this mood?

The song of the day is Alaska, by Dr. Dog. Here's a link:

These Philidelphia natives are an indie sensation, with music packed full of impressive harmonies and raw, inspiring lyrics.

Alaska is one of my favorite songs from the album, "We All Belong."

Give it a listen. Especially on a day like today, you'll think to yourself, "wow, I know exactly how they feel."

I only paid like 70 bucks for 4 tickets which in my book is great because ive paid hella lot of money for concert tickets in the past. Friday's are for Jenny Lewis

The song of the day is The Exectuion of All Things, by Rilo Kiley. Here's a link:

Ahhh Jenny Lewis. She's simply the perfect person. This song will certainly be a great one to crank in your room when you're kicking it after class.

This is easily one of the best songs Rilo Kiley has created. Unfortunately, last time I saw them they did not perform it. Better luck next time.

If you don't know this song, don't pass it up. And if you don't know this band, get to work! They're really a crowd pleaser. You can't not like Rilo Kiley.

Hip hop...Crunk Rock?

Posted by Ashley Morris

Photobucket

Yes it’s true. Lil Jon is set to release his long-awaited album, Crunk Rock in early 2010. Whether you love or hate him, he is back with his raunchy club going hooks that made his “What!” and “Okay!” as famous as Flavor Flav’s “Yeah boy!”.” “Killas” is set to be included in the album, and features The Game and Ice Cube.

The lyrical focus on this song seems to be society trying to change the rawness of hip hop. Jon certainly makes it clear he is all about the violence, materialism, and sexism strewn throughout the “Crunk” he created to amp up the Southern club scene.

As of right now, The Game’s lyrics in the song include, “Dear Mr. President Barack Obama, Right after you catch Osama, Tell Mr. Waso, Please let Oprah know that I won't ever stop sayin’ b**** and h**” . And Ice Cube’s bars include, “Remember a world without hip hop, Lord used to believe these b**** cops.”

These are extremely strong statements that need a lot of feedback from hip h ... more »

Oh it's Radiohead.

Hello!

Happy Hump Day, hope everyone is staying dry. The weather is perfectly miserable out. But lucky for you all, I have a song that will get you through the dreariness.

The song of the day is Reckoner, by Radiohead. Here's a link:

This song is off their latest Grammy Award winning album, In Rainbows. The entire cd is phenomenal, but this song makes me melt every time. Hauntingly beautiful.

Any Muse fans out there? It is OBVIOUS Matthew Bellamy listened to a ton of Radiohead when he was mastering his sound. And I don't blame him! Radiohead is damn inspiring if you ask me.

Anyway, enjoy Reckoner. I know I say this everytime, but it really is one of my favorites.

The Sixteenth Note -AP Tour!!

For example I saw a couple, where one was wearing an electrical outlet and the other person was wearing the plug. It was so cute and very original. But i saw a lot of Ninja turtles, which was annoying. O and we saw quite a few of sookie stackhouse's as well.

So I am attending the AP Tour Fall Ball with a couple of my friends on Thursday at the house of blues. The Academy is... and Mayday Parade are performing. I'm mainly going because of Mayday Parade because they are awesome. I've seen them before and they always put on a great show. SO you guys should check them out!!

I don't know how familiar you all are with G. Love, but he and his crew are simply...saucy. Ha. Really though. This song is off my all time FAVORITE album by them, Philadelphonic. It features a lot of that badass harmonica, and is the bridge between their bluesiness, and their funky hip hop stuff.

I here they put on one hell of a show too. I have yet to see them, but my sister did last year and said they just didn't want to get off the stage. I think that's when you know musicians are passionate about their music- when they just want to play all night.

Hip Hop….The Autotune…

Posted by Ashley Morris

After Jay-Z’s backlash on the autotune takeover of main stream hip hop, Redman announced on Vibe magazine website that he would be using the device for his upcoming alter-ego album, Reggie Noble 9 ½ . I have mixed feelings about the autotune. Snoop Dogg’s “Sensual Seduction” worked, but some of the T-Pain songs floating around now just doesn’t cut it. Redman clarifies to Vibe that the Reggie Noble 9 ½ album is “ not Redman…”, and that his follow up album to 1996’s Muddy Waters a.k.a Muddy Waters II will be out sometime next year, making it less obnoxious that one of my fav lyrical-slamming rappers has decided to pick up the robot-pop-making device.
