Wonderful Russian Animation

Posted by Shaun Gummere

My wife Susanna recently stumbled upon the wonderful work of Russian animator Yuri Norstein on YouTube. Start, as we did, with the lovely and affecting "Hedgehog in the Fog," then watch the very interesting documentary on the animator. His acclaimed movie "Tale of Tales" is also available (in several parts).

It's insane how much time people spend on the website youtube. It's become an addictive phenomenon for people all over the world.

Conceptually, digital art is many things: movies, speed painting, digital photography/photoshop, computer animations, etc. The main thing is that the world gets to see it from the comfort of their own home. It's so easily accessible! People even get their portfolios out there using the digital world, (look for that in a later blog!). You can even find tutorials for digital art on youtube, how educational.

In a way, the internet is one big art gallery waiting to be explored!

A favorite of mine happens to be abstract art. The flow of the music and the pulse of it's beat is so important when combining colors and collections.

The awesome thing about the internet is the ability to get your work out there. If you are an artist, there is now the option of having a digital portfolio! It's a great way, (and cheap, too!), to mass market yourself. You can even go global! It's a great way to put you ahead of the group in the job markets too. It shows you have a lot of digital experience, (even if you don't...).

Here's how:

Step 1: Start a blog! Put yourself out there. Throw ideas around, shout out what you feel! You'd be surprised how many people are interested in what you have to say.

Step 2: Get a Flickr account. I know there are many other programs, but Flickr is the best, (trust me).

Step 3: Take HIGH-QUALITY digital pictures of all your work, (it's pretty easy if you work with digital pictures in the first place!) and set yourself up! Upload them everywhere you can think of. It's pretty cheap now-a-days to get your own website for a year, if you're tech-savvy enough to make it look professional.

Step 4: Get ... more »
