designing a web portfolio

Posted by Frances Botsford

Creating a design portfolio is never easy since you're designing for yourself and an audience of other designers. And with a web portfolio (I am a coder as well), I feel like the code and scripts and everything have to be perfect - or as near as possible. I usually fluctuate between creating a bunch of designs in quick succession and leaving the same site up for a year or more, but I'm pretty happy with the new design.

Let me know what you think!

Spotlight on: Polyvore, Looklet, etc.

I am beginning to believe the not-so-old adage "The internet has everything." It has so many things for so many different audiences. Here is something for the shopaholics.

If you love playing dressup and online window shopping, you will love Polyvore and Looklet.

Polyvore.com (http://polyvore.com) is basically an online collage maker. It is mainly used for composing outfits. Simple premise, yet pretty addictive. Once you set up an account, you have hundreds of thousands of clothing items and accessories to choose from to create the wardrobe of your dreams. You can even import objects from other websites using the Clipper tool. Whether you are looking to make up a cute everyday ensemble or to create a crazy color wheel of objects a la the mom from "Bee Season," Polyvore is sure to entertain you for hours.

Looklet.com (http://looklet.com) has a more limited selection than Polyvore but there you can see your outfits on real live models. (Exciting, I know.) It gives you less autonomy than ... more »

The evolution of Sephora.com

Posted by Brittany Stone

As a frequent Sephora customer, I have seen its website change from your average, run of the mill retail website to something more user-friendly. Here are some things that make the visit to Sephora.com just a little more worthwhile.

-User reviews: Peer reviews are what a lot of people rely on to make their cosmetic selections, especially online. Just look at the popularity of makeup blogs. Sephora recognized this and added customer reviews. So now you don't have to search to see if what you're buying is any good.

-Blog: Its sole purpose isn't just advertising new Sephora products. With news, facts, and advice, it's actually something worth perusing.

-Free stuff: Free returns, free samples, and little presents on your birthday (if you sign up for Beauty Insider).

Spotlight on: Tumblr

Posted by Brittany Stone

Tumblr is a micrcoblogging platform, meaning it lets you create your own blog except it's micro- simpler, shorter, basically less words and more images. Most are made up of unoriginal (not composed by the blog's author) content. To me, Tumblr recalls those
Tralfamadorian novels from Bob White's Comm Media class.

Browsing Tumblr is addictive. Here are some worth looking at:

http://butyourelikereallypretty.tumblr.com - Regina from Mean Girls meets a new celebrity every week.
http://slaughterhouse90210.tumblr.com - High and low culture are combined charmingly.
http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/ - I think the title is self-explanatory.
