Adventures in Veganism: No Cheese?!

"You're a vegan?? Oh my gosh, I couldn't live without cheese!" This is the response I usually get to my new lifestyle, and the reaction I initially had as well. After a failed attempt about a year ago, I have been a proud vegan for the past 3 months.

Now: The cheese thing (since I'm sure everyone is wondering) - yes, I miss it, but not terribly. This is one of the foods that does not offer a delicious vegan alternative (seriously, stay away from vegan cheese: it was a horrifying experience on so many levels). The small cravings I have are not enough to abandon my morals.

Why am I a vegan? In short, it's a lot healthier for my body and the world around me. Meat and dairy production do not function according to sustainable and ethical standards. But I will save this topic for another blog.

Adventures in Veganism: Changes

Since I've gone vegan, I've felt so many different changes in my body and my life. It's pretty incredible, actually.

I'm pretty in tune with my body thanks to yoga, but veganism has definitely heightened this sense. I have to be very aware of what I am eating at all times - to me veganism is about more than just avoiding animal products; it's about having a healthy balanced diet. It is just as easy to be an unhealthy vegan (ex: vegan deserts, french fries) as it is to be an unhealthy meat-eater. In order to make sure I was getting all the proper nutrients, I read "Becoming Vegan" Vesanto Melina (this is a great resource about how to be a vegan, and the health benefits).

My diet has greatly expanded to include more raw fruits, veggies and nuts. I won't lie, it is a shock to the body in the beginning.
