My last post was about job hunting and search engines to find jobs. And before that, I talked about the debate between going straight to grad school or finding a job.
Well, I realized last night I left out another option I've heard my friends talking about and read about online. Last night my friend IM'ed me to tell me he got a job offer after graduation. Knowing him, I thought it would be some high-profile Wall-Street banking job OR that he was chosen to work for a senator from our home state of Maine in the nation's capital. Surprisingly, it was neither. Teach for America offered him an elementary school teaching job in Washington, D.C.
Teach for America and other programs that look for recent graduates to teach in inner-cities and around the world has seen a huge increase in applications with such a scary job market for the class of 2009. This article, http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/bal-volunteer0223,0,7204361.story, highlights organizations with application increases. ... more »

Two months, exactly, from today is graduation. I woke up this morning and when I looked at my phone and saw, "Sun, Mar 15" I had a moment of panic. Two months from today the class of 2009 will be getting their diplomas. Am I ready--absolutely not. Am I excited--yes!
In the past few months I've been thinking a lot about where I want to live after graduation and if its even feasible to move out of Boston right now. Two months ago was the beginning of the semester and that certainly didn't feel like that long ago. Now I'm thinking about moving and starting all over--without a job. Probably not a good idea...
Anyway, in one of my firs blogs I talked about my resume. I have almost finalized and have been sending it out as is, but any extra feedback I get along the way I incorporate. My brother sent me a link to a really great blog with resume tips that I wanted to share. www.squawkfox.com has lots of information about living on a budget/being frugal and enjoying it. She posted a l ... more »

On Thursday, March 26, the 50 Days Fundraiser for the Class of 2009 will be held at the Improv Asylum on Hanover Street in the North End at 8pm. The purpose of the event is to celebrate 50 days until graduation at a venue outside of Simmons.
Another purpose of the event is to raise money for the class of 2009 and events during Senior Week. Tickets are $20 and half of all ticket sales will go to the class of '09. An e-mail to the class of 2009 states that students can get tickets by calling 617-263-NUTS (6887) and mentioning the promo code GRAD09.
All seniors are invited to attend as well as faculty and other Simmons community members.
I think it sounds like a fun event, if seniors go. It would be nice to raise money for events during senior week like the Commencement Ball. Perhaps the commencement ball won't be as much as a controversy as the Soiree was...

As this is the last week of classes and I was set to blog for the whole semester, this will be my last blog on all-thing-seniors. I tried to blog about things that were interesting and people would care about.
I recall one of my first blogs being about the job search and how daunting it was/is in this economy. I thought at this time I would have landed a job and be on my way to the "real world" as planned. Unfortunately, I have limited prospects and am continuing the job hunt but with a new, more positive outlook.
I've learned a lot about job search sites, and definitely recommend using them because it cannot hurt. However, as most people are saying in this economy you have to network and talk with people you know. Our professors have more experience and contacts than we do, so reach out to them for advice. It's what they're there for! Also, I have gotten great response from contacting Simmons alums found on Alumnet for career advice. They are more than happy to help because ... more »
