A look into the world of music supervision

Posted by Shannon Brown

Hey all!

So, one of my hundreds of dream jobs is to become a music supervisor, otherwise know as the person who picks the songs to be used in movies. I first discovered that the profession existed while reading an old Rolling Stone on a train from Munich to Amsterdam at the end of 2007. The article featured an interview from Alexandra Patsavas, probobly the most famous music supervisor out there. She is the reason all the cool kids in your high school started listening to good music. She did the music for the O.C. and now does it for Gossip Girl and Grey’s. Feel free to check her out. http://chopshopmusic.com/

The article caught my attention because it mentioned Will Dailey, the brother of one of my best friend’s from Simmons. www.willdailey.com He is signed to CBS records, a label the network created in order to have great music on its shows. Even if you haven’t heard of Will, chances are, if you watch TV, you’ve heard his music.

Basically, what I would love to do as a music s ... more »

Gossip Girl 3:2 "The Freshman"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

In tonight episode of Gossip Girl, as usual there were some pretty exaggerated depictions of college life. Blair, Dan, Vanessa, and the infamous Georgina just moved into the freshman dorms at NYU. Blair adorned her floormates with giftbags complete with Tiffanys jewlery boxes. In an attempt to make some new friends Blair also decided to throw a party on their floors common room. The common room where the party was thrown looked more like a fine Japaneese restaurant than a freshman dorm common room. The party was also complete with handmade sushi and sake. Another party that was depicted on the show was located on the roof of their dorm and featured multiple kegs, a dj booth, and a lot of people.
...I'm sorry but no..never going to happen. Last time I checked Residence Life would not approve of a kegger on the roof of freshman housing...but maybe that's just Simmons.

Gossip Girl 3:3 "The Lost Boy"

This week on Gossip Girl I noticed a commercial that featured fashion designer Anna Sui and her new Gossip Girl inspired line for Target! The fashions on Gossip Girl are often quite outrageous in style and price. Anna Sui has created a more affordable and and everyday fashion line for the superstore. The fashion line ranges in price from $20 for tops to upwards of $70 for dresses. Although some people may still find $70 for a dress from Target to be overpriced, it is designed by renound fashion designer Anna Sui and inspired by her favorite show, Gossip Girl. This is definitely something that I think is worth checking out!

Gossip Girl 3:4 "Dan de Fleurette"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

In tonights episode of Gossip Girl we are introduced to Vanessa's new roommate, who just happens to be a famous actress named Olivia, who is portrayed by Hilary Duff. Like any well known celebrity Olivia has a publicist named KC. KC is portrayed as your stereotypical, lying, manipulating, brownnosing, Hollywood publicist. When Serena gets a job working with Olivia's co-star Ursula who is portrayed by Tyra Banks, she is encouraged to lie to her client because as KC puts it "it is in the best interest of the client." Serena rejects KC's advice and ends up getting herself fired due to her actions.

As a PR and Marketing major, I find it to be quite offensive when Public Relations professionals are shown in such a way. Gossip Girl is not the first series to do this either, Sex and the City's Samantha Jones, The Hills's Heidi Montag, etc., have all been sterotypical representations of women in PR. I hate to say it as a fan of Gossip Girl, but I was thouroughly unimpressed by tonights epis ... more »

Gossip Girl 3:5 "Rufus Getting Married"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

Well wasn't this episode just filled with drama! First off we have Lily and Rufus move up their wedding to the following day. I'm sorry but how in God's name can a wedding of that magnitude be all of a sudden be picked up, rearranged and completely changed and be expected to run smoothly? It can't. Georgina decided to bring Lily and Rufus's lovechild, Scott to their wedding. (they had been previously notified that their son "Andrew" had died) On top of all of this Bree Buckley exposes to Nate that she had only been using him to sabotage Carter Bazin's relationship with Serena. Bree did this because Carter came up the the brilliant idea to marry her cousin for wealth to get him out of him gambling debt. I do not think that it is possible for one 60 minute show to be packed with more confusing bits of drama.

Gossip Girl 3:6 "Enough about Eve"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

In tonights episode I was completely stunned at the fact that Serena and Nate took part in a gambling scheme that involved over $100,000 in cash. How do 18-year-old college freshman manage to get a hold of that much money? Serena and Nate initially did this to try and get Serena's boyfriend, Carter Bazin out of financial and physical harm. They thought that by gambling with massive ammounts of money, they could pay off the powerful family who were out to get Carter. The irony in all of this is that it is gambling what got him in trouble in the first place.

Gossip Girl 3:7 "How To Succeed In Bassness"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

On this weeks episode of Gossip Girl, Jenny is forced to choose between her relationship with her stepbrother and best friend Eric and her title as "Queen Bee." Jenny and her followers always eat lunch on the steps of the Met. Although they do not always sit at the top, no one ever dare sit above them on the steps. The one day that Eric and his friend dare to sit above Jenny, the "Queen Bee", to test if she is still the same old Jenny with her newfound popularity. Jenny and her followers then react to this by dumping a yogurt parfait all over Eric's head. This infact was a true test of Eric and Jennys friendship.

Gossip Girl 3:8 "The Grandfather: Part II"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

On tonight’s episode of Gossip girl there were two instances in which I felt were highly relatable to the world of public relations. In the first scenario, Serena is working for a public relations firm and during an argument with her boss she says "I know, my only value is my social network." In the world of PR having a strong social network can very helpful is creating trusting and mutually beneficial relationships with your clients. The other instance where I felt that there was a strong PR presence was when Nate's cousin, Trip who happens to be campaigning for a political position in NYC, finds himself amidst a pseudoevent, one which he has no idea he is taking part in. For those of you who don’t know what a pseudoevent is, it is merely an event that is created for the sake of reporting on it in order to gain publicity. If the media is not present, there is no event. Trip jumps into the Hudson River to save a drowning man and is automatically labeled a hero. We then come t ... more »

Gossip Girl 3:9 "They Shoot Humphreys, Don't They?"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

On this weeks episode of Gossip Girl, Serena is given a job as a media relations representative for a young congressman in New York. Although Serena has just graduated from high school this past year and has no public relations experience at all, she seems to get the job with ease. As the viewer we are led to believe that Serena was granted this job due to her rediculous social network and her model good looks. A situation such as this is quite frustrating for those of us who are hoping to emerge in the PR world in the years to come. We are spending thousands of dollars on an education to get us to where Serena is right out of high school. The situation just does not seem fair.

Gossip Girl 3:10 "The Last Days of Disco Stick"

Posted by Meghan Doherty

On this weeks episode of Gossip Girl, we were graced with the presence of musical royalty, Miss Lady Gaga. As a huge Lady Gaga fan I was personally ecstatic when I heard that she would be making a guest appearance on the show. Although she did not make her acting debut, her private performance at NYU which was arranged by the character Blair in an attempt to gain acceptance was amazing. She performed her newly released song called “Bad Romance.” Her performance flowed very well with the show and was not just randomly inserted into the plot. In an interview with MTV, Gaga explained that she did not want the performance to be out-of-tune with the storyline of the show, so she sat down with the script-writers and proposed her idea. Ultimately the song “Bad Romance” was made a part of the storyline and easily assimilated into the pre-existing drama of the show. "Bad Romance" debuted at number nine on the November 14, 2009 chart of the Billboard Hot 100, making it the highest- ... more »
